Hi everyone,
I have been studying for about 3 months and will be taking the GMAT Feb. 7th. I spent the last couple of months gaining background knowledge for the quant and verbal sections by completing TTP and the Kaplan/OG verbal books. I used the Kaplan CATs as practice, scoring between a 660 and 690. After reviewing some of my mistakes on these tests and reviewing other material, I tried to asses my progress a few weeks before the exam by taking the first official test released by GMAC. I scored a 710 (47 Q, 41 V), and my target score is a 720. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to review this exam, and practice other material so that I can reach my target score. I feel like this is a very achievable goal and was wondering what people's typical advice is for studying 1 month before the exam.

Hi ghm910,
Yes!! 720 seems achievable with a little more effort. To analyze the mock, go through the solution of each question (even if you got it right), compare your approach with the right one, narrow down the gaps in the approach if any. This is how you should go about working in your weak areas and improving your methodology. Once you do this, practice a few questions daily to solidify your learning of the right methodology. Once you feel confident, take another mock. If you get similar score, then you are good to go for the test. All the best

Your mock score is decent, and the score of 720 is achievable.

With my GMAT tutoring, guidance, and counseling experience, we have to accept the fact with a pinch of salt that diagnostic/ mock test scores are above then what one should expect in a real test. There is often a dropping in the score. Some students have even experienced a drop of 100 pointers. It is one of the realities, and your preparation should not sideline this fact.
A couple of things that can be a noticeable barrier to your scores would be some or all of the below.
• Inefficiency by using time-consuming Conventional method to tackle DS and PS questions still
• No expert support (maybe) who can tutor, analyze, and guide you during your learning, especially on hard level questions while stably hitting middle-level questions.
• Lack of many updated questions and practice in the recent exam trend
• Not well aligned with time to solve questions.
We would suggest you make a note of various possible combinations to achieve a score of 720. The possible scores will help you track your performance after taking the mock or practice test. It will also help you maintain balance in both the sections, and you will always be in a great position to allot the study hours to a specific area accordingly.
