OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The original sentence supplies the incorrect plural verb “are” to refer to the singular subject “growth.”

(A) This answer choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.

(B) This answer choice uses the unidiomatic construction “numbers of vehicles” rather than the appropriate idiom “the number of vehicles.” Furthermore, the plural verb “are” does not agree with the singular subject “growth.”

(C) CORRECT. This answer choice supplies the correct singular verb “is” to refer to the singular subject “growth.” In addition, this choice uses the appropriate idiomatic construction “the number of vehicles.”

(D) This answer choice uses the unidiomatic construction “numbers of vehicles” rather than the appropriate idiom “the number of vehicles.”

(E) In this answer choice, the plural verb “are” does not agree with the singular subject “growth.” Furthermore, the possessive phrase “vehicles’ numbers” is awkward and unidiomatic. The appropriate idiom is “the number of vehicles.”

Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-

souvik101990
According to industry analysts, the recent growth in the number of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas are likely to accelerate in the future.

A. the number of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas are
B. the numbers of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas are
C. the number of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas is
D. the numbers of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas is
E. hybrid motor vehicles’ numbers in major metropolitan areas are

Choice A: This answer choice features a subject-verb disagreement between the noun "growth" and the verb "are". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice B: This answer choice repeats the error found in Option A. Additionally, this answer choice uses the unidiomatic construction "numbers of vehicles", rather than the correct construction "the number of vehicles". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice C: This answer choice maintains subject-verb agreement and proper idiom construction throughout the sentence. Thus, this answer choice is correct.

Choice D: This answer choice repeats the idiom-related error seen in Option B. Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice E: This answer choice repeats the subject-verb disagreement seen in Option A. This answer choice also uses the unidiomatic phrase "vehicles' number", rather than "number of vehicles". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Hence, C is the best answer choice.

All the best!
