Hi,

Will take the GMAT twice.

Can one notify the schools only after the test has been taken?

Will B-schools automatically take the best out of two scores?

Does it look bad if one of the scores is materially lower than the other one?

Can one notify the schools only after the test has been taken?

You select your list of schools prior to starting the test. They will be sent out when you accept your score at the end. You could also choose not to send any scores in the beginning by leaving the list blank, but you will have to pay a fee for every school later on

Will B-schools automatically take the best out of two scores?
I'd say 99% will just select the best overall score out of two, regardless of split.

Does it look bad if one of the scores is materially lower than the other one?
Not really, if anything it shows that you have tried to take it more than once and you aren't lazy. Ideally, you would do better on the second test, but if not you can always cancel you score and just submit what you received on the first test.

The post above answers most of your queries. Just to add on a point, after your second attempt you will get a score either greater than or less than the first score. If its greater than it is a positive signal for schools that you have put in effort to improve. If its lesser, you will probably end up cancelling it and schools won't even know you took a second attempt. So there's nothing to lose.

Also, when applying to b-schools you will anyway have to mention your score. So you get to decide which score you want the b-schools to consider. They will just verify it from the official report.

Thanks to the new provision we can decide even if we wish to revive our cancelled score, generally you send of the scores to the B school as part of application if not done at the centre itself.
