The sentence is written in indirect speech and reflects a past event. So we require the usage of past tense. Options B, C and D can be eliminated.

A is incorrect because of Subject Verb Agreement error. Notice that the subject 'incidence' is singular and a plural 'were' is used.

Answer: E

1. The sentence is written about a past event, hence we need past tense.
2. The subject is "the incidence of racist remarks". This singular, hence we need a singular verb

A. although anti-racism workshops had been conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks were
were is incorrect. We need a singular verb
B. even though anti-racism workshops have been conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks was
Have been is wrong. The sentence is written about a past event, hence we need past tense
C. although anti-racism workshops are being conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks is
are being conducted is wrong. The sentence is written about a past event, hence we need past tense
D. although anti-racism workshops are conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks was
are conducted is wrong. The sentence is written about a past event, hence we need past tense
E. even though anti-racism workshops had been conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks was
Correct

C. although anti-racism workshops are being conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks is

Whenever you see a "being" in the sentence, try to justify the use of it. Most of the time the usage of being is incorrect. A process to justify the use of being is to insert "in the process of" before being. If the sentence still makes sense then probably the sentence is correct. You still have to look for other errors obviously.

Eg: although anti-racism workshops are (in the process of) being conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks is
Workshops happened in the past, so the usage of being here in option C is wrong. You can also refer to the complete explanation of the tense issues from TeamGMATIFY above.

If "are" in option D was replaced with "were",would it be correct? If correct, which option will be best suited,D or E?

Also is there any difference between "although" and "even though". Which is preferred?

A. although anti-racism workshops had been conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks were
Subject verb error the incidence singular so we need singular verb was not were.
B. even though anti-racism workshops have been conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks was
wrong tense. we need past perfect to show the anti racism workshop was conducted earlier before the the incidence of racist remarks.....
C. although anti-racism workshops are being conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks is
We need past tense verb
D. although anti-racism workshops are conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks was
we need past tense verb
E. even though anti-racism workshops had been conducted with the student body, the incidence of racist remarks was Correct

Hello,
I have a query about the tense, as mentioned in the sentence that the teacher stated something but how can we be so sure that what teacher stated is a past event, why it can't be ongoing event?

I'm going to agree with VKat on this one. There's no indication that the events have to be in the past, so there's no reason to say that E is preferable to C. We could say that in C, the workshops are still ongoing, so there's less contrast (why is it surprising that racist remarks persist if the workshops are happening right now?), but that's not too compelling. We might expect that during the workshops is exactly when the problem would be at its lowest. I don't think we can use this subtle meaning issue to settle the matter, so I'd call C/E a tie and throw the question back.

There is a difference between although and even though =>even though adds more emphasis to normal though or although
ACD are out
A has agreement error
B and D are in => E is in correct tense

Hi experts

Please shed some light on this question .
C has present tense although being is not wrong this sentence makes absolutely sense .
We again have "still" in the non underlined part so we can infer that the action is still going on .

E uses past perfect tense to make highlight which action took place first but the non underlined part use "still" that would make it ambiguous .

Please explain

Regards,
Arvind
