Hi can you tell me why the second dropdown is the same as? we just don't know anything about the average goals conceded per match.

Team A has participated in the last four Hockey World Cups, playing 3 matches in the league stage of each tournament. The chart above shows the number of goals scored ("Goals For") and goals conceded ("Goals Against") by Team A in the league stage of each tournament.

Official Solution:

Drop-down 1:

For the first drop-down, we are looking for the year in which Team A must have lost at least one match, not just could have lost. The only World Cup where Team A conceded more goals than it scored was in the 2014 World Cup. Therefore, in 2014, Team A must have lost at least one match.

Drop-down 2:

The total goals scored across all four World Cups is 14, as is the total number of goals conceded. Thus, the average goals scored per match by Team A is equal to the average goals conceded per match.

Correct answer:

Dropdown 1: "2014"

Dropdown 2: "same as"

Team A played 3 matches in each of the 4 World Cups, so total matches = 3 * 4 = 12.

From the chart:

  • Total goals FOR = 6 + 2 + 3 + 3 = 14
  • Total goals AGAINST = 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 14

So:

  • Average goals scored per match = 14/12
  • Average goals conceded per match = 14/12

Since both are equal, the correct answer is "same as."

If you count the number of goals for that is equal to no of goals team A failed to prevent (conceded) in other words goals against
Then both are equal to 14.
So it's same
