Why do Technisoft needs more number of Software Developers than number of Lead Engineers?

I suppose you are asking about question number 1, statement 3.

According to the OE:

The cost will be as follows:

Software Development per month = 1 * Project Manager + 2 * Lead Engineers + 4 * Software Developers + 2 * Testing Engineers = 12,000 + 16,000 + 24,000 + 10000 = $62,000

Software Testing per month = 1 * Project Manager + 1 * Lead Engineer + 1 * Software Developer + 2 * Testing Engineers = 12,000 + 8,000 + 6,000 + 10,000 = $36,000

Software Maintenance per month = 1 * Project Manager + 1 * Lead Engineer + 1 * Software Developer + 1 * Testing Engineer = 12,000 + 8,000 + 6,000 + 5,000 = $31,000

Statement 3: Technisoft needs more number of Software Developers than number of Lead Engineers.

Yes, in all types of projects, there are at least as many or more Software Developers than Lead Engineers.

Answer: True

Answer: True

But Sajjad1994, how can we assume that Technisoft "needs" one set of engineers more than other set of engineers?

question 1
Quote:
Technisoft needs more number of Software Developers than number of Lead Engineers.
So, what this company needs is a number? not people not employee?
I don't think this question is from GMAC. It must be written by a non-native speaker of english.

question 2
Quote:
A client with a budget of $300,000 and a project requirement of 40 man months can afford Technisoft.
Testing team is at your disposal.
The cost of five people working for eight months = 8 × (12 + 8 + 6 + 5 × 2) = 288 < 300
So, the answer shall be Yes, not No.

Official Explanation

1. For each of the following, select True if the statement is true as per the information provided. Otherwise select False.

Explanation

The cost will be as follows:

Software Development per month = 1 * Project Manager + 2 * Lead Engineers + 4 * Software Developers + 2 * Testing Engineers = 12,000 + 16,000 + 24,000 + 10000 = $62,000

Software Testing per month = 1 * Project Manager + 1 * Lead Engineer + 1 * Software Developer + 2 * Testing Engineers = 12,000 + 8,000 + 6,000 + 10,000 = $36,000

Software Maintenance per month = 1 * Project Manager + 1 * Lead Engineer + 1 * Software Developer + 1 * Testing Engineer = 12,000 + 8,000 + 6,000 + 5,000 = $31,000

I. Software Development for 6 months = $372,000

Software Testing for 12 months = $372,000

Yes, six months of Software Development cost the same as one year of Software Maintenance.

II. Software Testing for 6 months = $216,000

Software Maintenance for 7 months = $217,000

No, six months of Software Testing does not cost more than seven months of Software Maintenance.

III. Yes, in all types of projects, there are at least as many or more Software Developers than Lead Engineers.

Hence, True-False-True is the correct answer choice.

Official Explanation

2. For each of the following, select Yes if the statement is inferable from the information provided. Otherwise select No.

Explanation

I. The cheapest project is Software Maintenance project, with $31,000 as cost per month and 4 man months. Since the client needs 40 man months, the work would go on for 10 months, and the cost would be $310,000. The client cannot afford Technisoft.

The statement cannot be inferred.

II. For a Software Maintenance project, $31,000 is the cost per month. Since the client needs 6 months, the cost would be $186,000. The client can afford Technisoft for such a project. However, if the project required six months of Software Development, the cost would cross $300,000. Since "No" is a possibility, this statement cannot be inferred.

The statement cannot be inferred.

III. For Software Testing projects, Technisoft needs more Testing Engineers, and for Software Development projects, Technisoft needs more Software Developers. Since we do not know how many projects Technisoft has, or plans to have, of each category, we cannot comment on whether it needs more Software Developers than Testing Engineers.

The statement cannot be inferred.

Hence, No-No-No is the correct answer choice.

Official Explanation

3. Based on the information given in the passage, what will be the cost of a project that involves three months of Software Development, three months of Software Testing, and six months of Software Maintenance?

Explanation

The cost will be as follows:

Software Development per month = 1 * Project Manager + 2 * Lead Engineers + 4 * Software Developers + 2 * Testing Engineers = 12,000 + 16,000 + 24,000 + 10,000 = $62,000

Software Development for 3 months = $186,000

Software Testing per month = 1 * Project Manager + 1 * Lead Engineer + 1 * Software Developer + 2 * Testing Engineers = 12,000 + 8,000 + 6,000 + 10,000 = $36,000

Software Testing for 3 months = $108,000

Software Maintenance per month = 1 * Project Manager + 1 * Lead Engineer + 1 * Software Developer + 1 * Testing Engineer = 12,000 + 8,000 + 6,000 + 5,000 = $31,000

Software Testing for 6 months = $186,000

The total cost would be 186,000 + 108,000 + 186,000 = $480,000
Hence, C is the correct answer choice.

Hi Sajjad1994,

On question 1, 3rd statement, what guarantees that the company does not currently have only Software Testing and Software Development projects and, thus, only needs the same amount of Software Developments as of Lead Engineers? The statement is not necessarily true.

On question 2, 1st statement, the average cost per man month in Software Testing projects in $7.200 (five people = $36.000). Multiplying this cost by 40, the total cost is $288.000 dollars, which is lower than $300.000. Can a client with a budget of $300,000 and a project requirement of 40 man months afford Technisoft? Yes, depends on the type of project hired.

Still on question 2, but on the 2nd statement, the client could afford a six month project, if this project is either a Software Testing one or a Software Maintenance one. Can a a client with a budget of $300,000 and a project timeline of six months afford Technisoft? Yes, depends on the type of project hired.

I would suggest a change in the wording of the question to:
Can a client with a budget of $300,000 and a project requirement of 40 man months afford any type of project at Technisoft?
Can a a client with a budget of $300,000 and a project timeline of six months afford any type of project at Technisoft?

On the 3rd statement, the explanation says:

For Software Testing projects, Technisoft needs more Testing Engineers, and for Software Development projects, Technisoft needs more Software Developers. Since we do not know how many projects Technisoft has, or plans to have, of each category, we cannot comment on whether it needs more Software Developers than Testing Engineers.

Now, the logic that wasn't applied on the first question, 3rd statement, is being applied here. As I said, this seems to be the correct reasoning for me, but not to have it on the first question seems inconsistent.

Please take a look at the comments and evaluate if they make sense.

The logic here seems inconsistent with other official GMAT DI questions. Without stipulation for which types of projects are being purchased, it is possible to infer a yes answer for questions like "can a company with $300k budget afford technisoft". It seems like in other DI questions, if an answer can be inferred as true for a question without any given constraints- such as "for all project types", then it would be true. Or in the question about whether technisoft needs more SDs than LEs, the source material in other DI questions would include a line indicating that technisoft has or currently does staff for all three project types.

Maintenance          1           1              1         1                4

1. For each of the following, select True if the statement is true as per the information provided. Otherwise select False.

Six months of Software Development cost the same as one year of Software Maintenance. => Yes

Cost of 1 month of Development: 12 + 8 * 2 + 6 * 4 + 5 * 2 = 62(k)
Cost of 1 month Maintenance: 12 + 8 + 6 + 5 = 31(k)

62k = 31k * 2
=> 6 months of Development = 12 months (1 year) of Maintenance

Six months of Software Testing cost more than seven months of Software Maintenance. => No

Cost of 1 month of Testing: 12 + 8 + 6 + 5*2 = 36
=> 6 months of Testing: 36 * 6 = 216

7 months of Maintenance: 7 * 31 = 217

Technisoft needs more number of Software Developers than number of Lead Engineers. => Yes

For each project, the number of Dev required is always larger than that of Lead E.
Technisoft never increases the predefined number of personnel to expedite a project

2. For each of the following, select Yes if the statement is inferable from the information provided. Otherwise select No.

A client with a budget of $300,000 and a project requirement of 40 man months can afford Technisoft. => No

Development: 9 men a month

Testing:
  • 5 men a month => if the project requires 40 man months => 8 months
  • 36 * 8 = 288k
Maintenance:
  • 4 men a month => if the project requires 40 man months => 10 months
  • 31 * 10 = 310k => cannot afford
A client with a budget of $300,000 and a project timeline of six months can afford Technisoft. => No
The most expensive project is Development one - $62k a month
6 months: 62k * 6 = 372k > 300k

Technisoft needs more number of Software Developers than number of Testing Engineers. => No
For Development and Maintenance, the number of Dev > the number of Testing E.
For Maintenance, the number of Dev = the number of Testing E.
=> Not sure if Technisoft needs more Developers than Testing E.

3. Based on the information given in the passage, what will be the cost of a project that involves three months of Software Development, three months of Software Testing, and six months of Software Maintenance? [$480k]

3 months of Development: 62 * 3 = 186
3 months of Testing: 36 * 3 = 108
6 months of Maintenance: 31 * 6 = 186

Total = 480k

the question asked is "whether it can afford" it doesnt say all have to be covered in the project . So i believe this can be infered . Hence, explanation is not correct

man days means if 1 man was working how many days would he take or if work was to finish in one day how many men would be required. Similar is the case for man months.

So 40 man months would mean 40 man working for a month would finish the work or one man would finish the work in 40 months working alone. Of course you take the efficiency of each man equal.

from this 40 man month, you can take out the details required, that is 20 man would require 2 months or 4 man would require 10 months ans so on.

I have not gone through the question to answer on 4 man months. But you can try now and see if you are able to get the answer.
