Hi everyone,

I was admitted to Tepper (20k$/year) as well as Kelley (40k$/year). With the difference in tuition costs between the two programs and Kelley being in a cheaper area / offering free health insurance, Kelley would end up being ~80k cheaper overall.

Some background: For the last 5 years I've worked in a Product Development Test Lab as a Test Engineer for a large manufacturing company. I would like to use my MBA to transition into a Product Management position at a large tech company (Amazon/Google/Apple/etc.).

Given my target goals Tepper is definitely the stronger program overall, but it seems that Kelley would be able to get me into a similar post-graduation position for roughly half the price. However, Tepper seems to have a lot of momentum right now after opening up its brand new facilities while Kelley took a significant dip in the US news rankings this year. Due to this, I'm having some trouble putting a price tag on the difference between carrying the Kelley or Tepper brand name with me for the rest of my career and can't seem to decide between the two.

*Also, strongly considering applying to McCombs now before Round 2 is over.

My vote is for Tepper here, both might be able to get you there, and perhaps previous students have done it, but it is going to be a much easier path from Tepper. 80k is not a huge difference when looking at the money you'll make post-mba, and having Carnegie Mellon on your tech resume is going to carry much more weight than Indiana University, be it fair or not.

Anderson, or even USC, might also be solid round 2 options for you just due to proximity. You should be able to get some quality face time with those companies at either school with your background and a little networking. If you can get in and get some money at either it would be a very good choice IMO.

Definitely worth applying (anywhere in R2). Historically I feel Kelly and Tepper are not far apart in terms of opportunity and job prospects to warrant an $80k price tag though this year, there are 10 spots of ranking separation. And if that’s the long term trend than it is definitely a big difference. I think looking at longer trends and momentum - and it seems you are doing that - is more accurate than just checking one year’s stand.
