Why is the answer is D and Not option C?

Hi I would like to know if my understanding of the question is correct for the above question.
I eliminated options D and E based on the fact that "beneath the ruins after archaeologist" seems to convey that the archaeologist himself was beneath the ruins while in options A,B and C, I feel it is more clear that the archaeologist discovered the manuscript in a hidden chamber which in fact was beneath the ruins.
Then among options A,B and C the options with -ing modifiers make no sense. In option A the -ing modifier seems to convey that the discovery was made as the manuscript was shedding light on the civilizations.
Option B is not parallel.
Option C remains. It is free of any parallelism issues and I feel conveys the intended meaning as well.
Where am I going wrong? Kindly help.
