Acc to me, B is correct because "being" and "become" properly completing the sentence.

Option A - Both are missing.
Option C - being is not there.
Option D - what was and that of is the issue.
Option E - become is not there.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

I think it should be E. Being and become together while not having the exact same meaning, does appear to create a slight redundancy to me.

My answer is (A). It took me 27 seconds.
Still, I think the sentence should add an article before also-run and local hero.
The athlete went from an also-ran to a local hero after scoring the decisive points in the championship game.
Can someone explain why the articles can be omitted in this sentence?

(A) Despite the misgivings above, I chose (A) because it maintains perfect parallelism.
(B) Lack of parallelism between "being an also-ran" and "become a local hero"
(C) Lack of parallelism between "also-ran" and "become a local hero"
(D) "The athlete" is a person, not a status.
(E) Lack of parallelism between "being an also-ran" and "local hero"
