Meaning in short terms : X would not have happened if y had taken place.
POE -
A : Correct usage of have been here which states that if someone was not cognizant of method employed , the journal till date would not have been taken seriously ..
period from past till present demands present perfect here.
BUT the error is usage of pronoun "they" - we do not have a plural antecedent to which it can refer to.

B : The usage of present tense is something we can say not appropriate here , The more obvious mistake is missing cause and effect relation..
X would not have happened *if* why was the case..
Another mistake is use of *it* , was does it refer to? journal or study maybe? but either does not make sense.

C : same mistake as A , use of they is wrong

D : all sorts of errors again..
when is used in place of if , which does not make sense . when is used to show a specific time reference, and we dont have any here.
use of simple past with became is also wrong ..

in regards to the answer "have been taken seriously by the scientific community had scientists been"
Hello,
Sorry I might sound very dumb asking this question but I cannot understand how we can add the verb in "had scientists been" when there is already a verb in the sentence with "would have been". Seems that two sentences are build in one sentence. Hope my question is understandable?
