A. although supplementing their hunting with cultivation
B. although they supplemented their hunting with cultivation
C. but with supplementing their hunting with cultivation
D. and even though they supplemented their hunting with cultivation
E. and had supplemented their hunting with cultivation

The OG sentence presents contrast and we need to maintain that... Group of 2 & 3.. and is wrong, eliminate D&E..
In option C... the meaning of the sentence is changed... hunting is been supplemented by cultivation...
In option A.. hunters are supplementing their hunting with cultivation and not Aztecs...

Option B provides clear contrast and meaning.
