(A) and also damage or destroy(use of and is not correct,not only x but also y is correct)

(B) as well as damaging or destroying(same as in A)

(C) but they also cause damage or destroy(not only x but also y is correct,use of they is incorrect)

(D) but also damage or destroy(correct)

(E) but also causing damage or destroying( parallelism is to be maintained,causing is wrong )

Choice D is correct.

    Not only X but also Y is correctly used here.
    X and Y are parallel. X = gather in your lungs, Y = cause damage or destroy

    X and Y are not parallel. X = gather in your lungs, Y = causing damage or destroying

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:



This sentence has to do with another common idiomatic phrase: not only, but also. Eliminate A, B and C. It also has to do with parallel structure. Choice E does not complete the sentence by using a structure parallel to the earlier part of the sentence. ‘Gather’ is not parallel to ‘causing damage and destroying’. Choice D is the correct answer.
