The Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event, which occurred approximately 65.5 million years ago, increased the volcanic activity across the earth, to result in a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and deposit a thin band of sedimentation across the earth’s landmass.
A- to result in a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and deposit B- resulting in extinction of large animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and deposition C- to result in a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and thereby depositing D- resulting in large-scale extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and depositing E- to result in massive mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and thereby depositing

A- to result in a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and deposit- Use of "TO RESULT" changes the original intent since such use means that Extinction event happened only to cause Mass extinction. Same is the case with use of DEPOSIT. B- resulting in extinction of large animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and deposition - Place of LARGE changes the original intent. Moreover, use of DEPOSITION doesn't maintains Parallelism. C- to result in a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and thereby depositing Use of "TO RESULT" changes the original intent since such use means that Extinction event happened only to cause Mass extinction. Use of "THEREBY" changes the original intent since such use means that Mass Extinction caused Deposition. D- resulting in large-scale extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and depositing - Correct E- to result in massive mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and thereby depositing As explained in option C
'To result' implies intention, which is irrelevant in this case. resulting expound impact or consequence, which we want here. Drop A, C, and E. Between B and D, B is unparallel with 'resulting' and 'deposition'. D says 'resulting and depositing' - a clear winner.

A- to result in a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and deposit – To result is nonsensical as there is no intent B- resulting in extinction of large animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and deposition – Modifier large animal and plant changes the meaning ; Also resulting and deposition are not parallel C- to result in a large-scale mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and thereby depositing -To result is nonsensical as there is no intent D- resulting in large-scale extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and depositing – Correct E- to result in massive mass extinction of animal and plant species in a geologically short period of time and thereby depositing - To result is nonsensical as there is no intent
