The difference between Larry's and John's heights is twice the difference between Larry's and Ken's heights. If Larry is the tallest of the 3 men, what is the average (arithmetic mean) height of these 3 men?
Since given that L - J = 2(L - K), then L - J=2L - 2K and thus 2K = L + J. The question asks to find the value of (L + J + K)/3 = (2K + K)/3 = K, so essentially we need to find the value of K.
(1) Ken's height is 180 centimeters.
The above directly gives the value of K. Sufficient.
(2) Larry's height is 190 centimeters.
Knowing L does not help to get K. Not sufficient.
Answer: A.

Let the height be L, J and K respectively.
L-J = 2(L-K)......L-J=2L-2K.....L=2k-J
If Larry is the tallest of the 3 men, what is the average (arithmetic mean) height of these 3 men?
Average of the three men = \(\frac{L+K+J}{3}=\frac{2K-J+K+J}{3}=\frac{3k}{3}=K\)
So, knowing value of K is sufficient.
Statement 1 gives us the value of K..Sufficient
Statement 2 gives value of L, but we do not know the value of K and J.
