Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-

Abhi077 wrote:
The discovery of alligator bones in the ruins of Haojing, part of the capital of ancient China's Western Zhou dynasty (1046-771 BCE), helped archaeologists visualize an era in which large lakes had existed in now currently more arid regions.

A. in which large lakes had existed in a now currently more arid region

B. in which large lakes existed in what is now an arid region

C. when large lakes existed where there is a region now arid

D. when large lakes had existed in a current arid region

E. when large lakes existed in a region now that is arid

Choice A: This answer choice features a redundancy in its use of the phrase "now currently"; both "now" and "currently" convey the exact same information. Thus, this answer choice is not a very good one.

Choice B: This answer choice is the most concise one and conveys the intended meaning of the sentence. Thus, this answer choice is correct.

Choice C: This answer choice is highly awkward due to the use of the phrase "a region now arid". Thus, this answer choice is not a very good one.

Choice D: This answer choice incorrectly uses the adjective "current" to describe another adjective; the appropriate term to use in this context is the adverb "currently". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Choice E: This answer choice is awkward due to the use of the poorly constructed phrase "now that is arid". Thus, this answer choice is incorrect.

Hence, B is the best answer choice.

All the best!

MODIFIERS

A. in which large lakes had existed in a now currently more arid region ---------- "now" and "currently" are redundant.

B. in which large lakes existed in what is now an arid region ---------- CORRECT

C. when large lakes existed where there is a region now arid ---------- We need a present verb to establish that the region is NOW arid. The correct form would be "where there is a region THAT IS now arid."

D. when large lakes had existed in a current arid region ---------- It confuses the past with the present. Besides, past perfect tense is used incorrectly.

E. when large lakes existed in a region now that is arid ---------- "now" should modify "is". In order to do that it should be placed INSIDE the relative clause. The correct way would be "a region THAT IS NOW arid. "
