Two birds start flying simultaneously towards one another, the first leaving from West-Town at a speed of 4 kilometers per minute and the second bird, leaving from East-Town, at a speed of 1 kilometers per minute. What will be the distance, in kilometers, between the meeting point and West-Town?

A. 3.
B. 7.
C. 10.
D. 12.
E. 15.

By end of 1st min: distance covered by 1st bird is 4 km and 2nd is 1 km. Total distance = 5km.
By end of 2nd min: distance covered by 1st bird is 8 km and 2nd is 2 km. Total distance = 10km.
By end of 3rd min: distance covered by 1st bird is 12 km and 2nd is 3 km. Total distance = 15km.

So, meeting point is 12kms from West-Town (from where 1st bird started)

Hence, answer will be D.

Aren't birds flying way too fast. 240km/hr is an awesome speed. Faster than many cars in the world :D

Time taken by the birds to meet = 15/(4 + 1) = 3 mins

Distance traveled by the bird traveling from West-Town = 4 * 3 = 12

Answer: D

relative speed = 4+1=5 km/h
time taken = 15/4=3 hours
distance from west town = 4*3=12 kilometers

Let's assume they meet at point X - which is X Km from West-town => 15-X Km from East-town.

The time taken to reach the point X is the same for both birds => X/4 = 15-X/1

=> X = 60 - 4X

Solving we get X = 12 Km.

Letting t = the time at which the birds meet, we can create the distance equation:

4t + t = 15

5t = 15

t = 3

The distance between the meeting point and West-Town will be equal to the distance that the bird leaving from West-Town travels. So, the birds will meet 3 x 4 = 12 miles from West-Town.

Answer: D
