Official Explanation

2. Line 15 says that the discovery is indeed important. The author states which of the following to stress this point?

Explanation

Choice (B) in itself is not a point that would stress the importance of the discovery. Choice (C) is not supported by the passage. Choice (E) is the right option as science magazines usually do not make such a concession. This has been stressed in lines 9 – 10 by the use of the phrase unusual concession.

Answer: E

Official Explanation

4. Who would stand to gain the most out of the clinic test to detect BRCAI?

Difficulty Level: 600

Explanation

Line 1 of the passage tells us that BRCAI causes a hereditary form of breast cancer. Lines 15-17 also tell us that most other forms of cancer are caused due to cellular changes that take place after birth. Hence, not all women mentioned in (D) and (E) would gain from the clinical tests for BRCAI. It is only women with a history of breast cancer who would gain as the gene causes a hereditary form of breast cancer. Choice (B) is the correct option.

Can you explain q5? My impression is that it has the capacity to turn the breast cell malignant but not other genes.

Official Explanation

5. From the passage it can be inferred that BRCAI is more dangerous than many other genes because

Difficulty Level: Medium-Hard

Explanation

Passage state that BRCAI could be instrumental in making breast cells malignant even after it is destroyed. This implies that it is not totally harmless even after it is destroyed, which makes it more dangerous than other malignant genes. Choice (E) is therefore the right option.

Hello Sajjad,

Can I get a brief summary of the passage and the OE for Q3?
Explanation

3. BRCAI is completely different from all other known genetic codes in terms of

Explanation

A.
The passage explicitly mentions that BRCA1 is completely different from all other known genetic codes in terms of "the sequence of its chemical components." It states that the sequence of chemical components in this particular strand of DNA bears almost no resemblance to any other genetic message ever decoded.

B. The location of the gene on Chromosome-17 is mentioned, but it doesn't make BRCA1 different from other genetic codes. The location on the chromosome is a specific detail about its position, not the overall structure or sequence.

C. The passage mentions that scientists don't yet understand how the rogue gene causes breast cancer, so there is no detailed information about the action it has on the nucleus of other breast cells.

D. The passage notes that BRCA1 is an unusually long, complex gene. However, the question is asking about how it is different from other known genetic codes. While complexity is mentioned, it's not stated that it is different from all other known genetic codes based on complexity alone.

E. The passage mentions that BRCA1 can be crippled by many different mutations, but this refers to the effect mutations have on it, not the inherent characteristics that make it different from other genetic codes.

In summary, the passage emphasizes that the uniqueness of BRCA1 lies in the sequence of its chemical components, making option A the correct answer.

Answer: A

Please give detailed explanation of 2nd question (especially why B option is incorrect)
(E) is correct because the place it is written in the passage stresses the importance of the discovery directly. (B) also contains text that shows the importance of the discovery, but it looks more like a side note than a direct statement of the discovery. Although the discovery may contribute to efforts to reduce the mortality rate from breast cancer, this (B) does not directly link the discovery to that outcome. The author clarifies, "But it will not quickly reduce the death toll."
