The cake has been sliced into 12 square pieces by 5 straight cuts, each cut extending from one side of the pan to the opposite side of the pan. What is the minimum number of additional such cuts needed to halve each of the 12 pieces if the pieces remain in the pan as shown?

I think Answer B: the minimum number of cuts needed to halve all 12 pieces is 3.

The three additional cuts must go from one side to another. They must be lengthwise (else you need more cuts because there are 3 rows, but 4 columns), and parallel to Cut 1 and Cut 2.

Finally, they must be halfway between: the top edge and Cut 1 (first extra cut); Cuts 1 and 2 (second extra cut); and Cut 2and bottom edge (third extra cut).

Three such cuts divide each piece in half lengthwise.

Because there are three rows, there must be three more cuts to divide the space between those rows in half.
