B. in Spain in the 1950s by Dr. Jose Barraquer, who developed it as an alternative to the wearing of eyeglasses or of : wearing of sunglasses sounds wrong. Wearing noun , Jumping cat.
C. in the 1950s in Spain by Dr. Jose Barraquer, who developed it as an alternative to wearing eyeglasses or : correct IMO
D. in the 1950s in Spain by Dr. Jose Barraquer, who developed them as an alternative to eyeglasses or: wrong pronoun
E. in the 1950s in Spain by Dr. Jose Barraquer and was developed as an alternative to wearing eyeglasses or : The first step was not developed but the technique was.

--"then" incorrectly refers to lasik surgery technique. We should use "it"

B. in Spain in the 1950s by Dr. Jose Barraquer, who developed it as an alternative to the wearing of eyeglasses or of
--"to the wearing of eyeglasses" sound very awkward.

C. in the 1950s in Spain by Dr. Jose Barraquer, who developed it as an alternative to wearing eyeglasses or
--CORRECT
