Another, great question from GMAT Focus edition on playing around with words to make a simple question into a tough one.

The following statements describe certain characteristics of a certain pool of candidates for a position. Any candidate who did not meet the minimum qualifications for the position was immediately excluded from consideration. The two candidates who met the minimum qualifications for the position and met all of the desired qualifications also had multiple recommendations. All candidates who received a telephone interview also had extensive experience. All candidates who had extensive experience and impressed the hiring committee during the telephone interview were invited to interview on-site. At least one candidate declined an invitation for an on-site interview, and exactly one candidate was interviewed on-site without receiving a telephone interview.

Consider the following incomplete sentence:

If any candidate _______1________, then that candidate _______2________.

Select for 1 and for 2 two different options that best complete the sentence such that it can be logically inferred from the information provided. Make only two selections, one in each column.
For me, visualization helps!

Case 1
Min ->+ X -> excluded
  ↓
+Desired
  ↓
Multiple recomms

Case 2

Call

extensive exp
+ impress

On-site  ← No Call

+ 1 declined

1 should be followed by 2
If
+1: X min, no option comes before 1
+1: multiple recommendations, 2 should be Min + desired, no options available
+1: extensive exp, 2 should be call, no options available
+1: impressed, 2 should extensive exp or call
+1: Not any on-site, 2 could be extensive exp + impress because some have on-site without call

=> 1: impress, 2: extensive

All candidates who received a telephone interview also had extensive experience.

Those who impressed the hiring committee during the telephone interview
=> must have received a telephone interview
=> had extensive experience

Hi chetan2u KarishmaB,

Hi

There were two candidates who had multiple recommendation. We cannot be sure about others.

If you read the para, there is no link connecting multiple recommendations and interview on site..

All candidates who received a telephone interview also had extensive experience.All candidates who had extensive experience and impressed the hiring committee during the telephone interview were invited to interview on-site.
Statement 1:If received telephone interview, then you had extensive experience.
If extensive experience and impressed during the telephone interview, then invited on site.

Here is the catch:
You can impress during the telephone interview only if you got the call for telephone interview.
Statement 2:If impressed, then you got the call for telephone interview.

Let's combine both the statements:
If impressed---you got call for telephone interview--you had extensive experience.

Hence, If impressed---you had extensive experience.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if i faltered anywhere..

The correct answer makes sense to me, but I'm not sure why this answer also wouldn't work:

If any candidate (1) , then that candidate (2) .

1. impressed the hiring committee during the telephone interview
2. interviewed on-site

Since the question states: "All candidates who received a telephone interview also had extensive experience." and: "All candidates who had extensive experience and impressed the hiring committee during the telephone interview were invited to interview on-site."
Would this answer not work in the question?

Would love to get some clarity here, thanks!

EDIT: I think I figured it out, but leaving it here if anyone else has a similar question. This isn't the answer because "At least one candidate declined an invitation for an on-site interview", which means that getting the invitation doesn't mean that they chose to interview on site.

Correct. If it were "was invited to interview on-site" then it would have worked.

Took me a long time once I first saw this, but simply put just think as only 2 people had met the minimum criteria all other things are being said about those 2 people.

And the last sentence, makes it clear 1 person who was actually interview never came on site whereas other one came on site but was never interview over phone. See all the options now, it will be clear what works. But I had a hard time thinking about which one would fit column 1, unless I though about the fact the other candidate might also has extensive experience. But what makes the 1st candidate unique is the fact he was called over phone.
