The meaning suggests: The great depression has been studied in great deal by economists primarily for some strong reason.
Splitting into clauses.
1.  The Great Depression   has been  studied in great deal by economists, Independent Clause
2. primarily on account of providing insight into more recent economic conditions. Seems like a dependent clause.
SV error in clause 2. No SV pair exists. "providing" can be converted into a verb by replacing it with provide.

POE:
A on account of providing.  Explained as above in original sentence analysis. 
B on account of its providing.  Providing is not a verb 
C because of providing.  No SV Pair in DC 
D being it provides.  Usage of being is awkward  
E because it provides.   Correct one, introduces the right SV pair & "it" correctly refers to the great depression.

Yes ........ the 2nd half of the sentence after COMMA speaks of THAT reason

If I joing the 2 parts by because then the 2 parts should be clauses and we need a workring verb in second part
But if I use 'on account of'/'because of' the second part becomes a prepositional phrase and thus does not need a working verb. NO?

Yes u r right. But here "providing" is not a noun/noun phrases. "On account of" and "because of" are all prepositions used with noun phrases and are often used interchangeably. They indicate that something happened as a result of something or introduce the reason for something happening.

On account of usage is not right here. It is better to use because as it is a conjunction and the meaning of the sentence is also more clearer.

. C because of providing 'because' is fine as we are looking for why economists study the Great Depression. However, 'because of providing' is unidiomatic. D being it provides Good rule: eliminate 'being.' It's wordy. E because it provides Correct use of 'because.' The 'it' clearly refers back to the Great Depression.

This question is based on Idiomatic Usage and Construction.

The phrase “on account of” means “as the result of”. So, if we substitute the given phrase with the meaning, the sentence reads - The Great Depression has been studied in great deal by economists, primarily  as the result of  providing insight into more recent economic conditions. Since the second part of the sentence conveys a reason for the first part, the phrase “on account of” is inappropriate.
Option B contains the same phrase with the addition of the pronoun ‘its’. So, Options A and B can be eliminated.
 
 The participle ‘being’ is completely out of place in this sentence. So, Option D can be eliminated.

The conjunction ‘because’ is appropriate in this sentence but the phrase ‘of providing’ after the conjunction is idiomatically inappropriate. So, Option C can be eliminated. 
 
 The pronoun ‘it’ in this option appropriately refers to ‘the Great Depression’. The combination of the subject and verb “it provides” after the conjunction makes the meaning of the sentence clear.  Therefore, E is the most appropriate option.
