I've just seen a MAC ad with the "PC users are downgrading to XP", so funny!

Well I decided to keep my notebook (it's a Acer Aspire 2920 - I Know not that fancy as the Lenovos around, but will do the work) buy an iMac for my wife and see how this solution works...

I'm just finishing my downgrading right now, Vista really sucks...

Dont bother with an external drive.

If you have a desktop at home just share the CDrom drive onto the network and install whatever you need to install off of your own network. Just think about it, when was the last time you really needed a CDrom drive?

true that. I'll try going without an external CD-ROM for now since I have a desktop. I did buy a 320GB external hard drive as a backup device though (so I can make 2 partitions and back up my 160 GB HD twice, or just use it as backup storage).

Last month, when I was playing Planescape Torment. Yeah, I know that there's a tricky way to run the game without a cd, but I can't stand the hassle

external drive (I haven't got another machine);
I bought the LG GSA-E50L from newegg. It was a while ago but maybe $80? $90? $70?

Any how, it is very small in CASE you need to cary it along, but doesn't need a power adapter ever. (it has 2 usb power cables, but i've burned cds with my x61 and dont need to use both- perhaps it is needed for older machines.) Also, it is bootable as I did a fresh OS re-install to get the junk off the machine.

Went with thr Dell XPS m1330, couldn't resist the deal they had with Columbia.

Some of the features:
Vista Ultimate
2.4GHz
3GB RAM (good enough for Vista)
250 GB 7200RPM
LED screen
9-cell battery
Internal optical drive

It's interesting, I constructed the laptop so many different ways, and the total price came out better when I added more things like a longer warranty. It's because discounts kick it when you hit a certain price level or add certain features.

Well, DVD's in Brazil are region 4, in Europe are 2 and in USA 1, I have DVD's from all these 3 regions, and I do need an external drive to see them (if you know what I mean)...

But I agree, apart from DVD's and installing things usually the use of DVD/CD drive is minimal.

What about printer, is it REALLY necessary for Bschool? What printers (or those multi functions) would you guys recommend?

Printer is (i think) a personal decision. I prefer reading things on paper to reading them on a computer screen. So I got a cheap laser printer - the Brother HL2170W. It is fast, cheap, and prints wirelessly so I can hide it in the corner under a coffee table. (My apartment is REALLY too small so this last bit was important).

Of course, in theory you could get by with computer labs/kinkos for printing things to turn in and reading things on your laptop - but that depends on your level of patience and how nicely set up your school is.

I bought the above mentioned printer with an additional "long life" toner for about $120? on newegg a few months ago.

I've been using the HP ink jet printers forever. They're cheap these days (because ink is more expensive now) and you can get an "all in one" if you want it to do scanning and photocopying (I'm tempted to do that) or get the photosmart series if you ever print pictures (I have the Photosmart 7150 right now, 4-5 years and still lovin' it!)

I think a printer is useful, unless you live very close to school where you can use their printer. But I like to read my stuff on paper when I edit them, so a printer is a must for me.

It's 7/9 and still no word on the Thinkpad X200???

My mom just bought one of those all in one printer/scanner/fax/copy for around $65. It does a pretty good job and the price was great. I have a printer that I can use if I need to print stuff out, but plan to do as much printing as possible at school. Since I'm only living 5 blocks away I don't forsee that being a problem.

The X200 is (practically) here! Who's getting one? Cheaper and more powerful than the X300. :P
