VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION:
The easiest decision point to start with on this problem is the choice between “and males” and “with males” at the start of each answer. To see which is correct, simplify the sentence with slash-and-burn to read only the core elements: “hybridization between females AND males” OR “hybridization between females WITH males.” “Between…with” is incorrect so you can confidently eliminate (D) and (E).
The remaining differences between (A), (B), and (C) relate to sentence construction. In (A), the “now extinct” is set off with commas correctly to show that this modifier is extra information about “another species” – if you get rid of that modifier you see that (A) correctly states: “another species that belonged to a group…” In (B) there is no comma after “extinct” so this creates one big modifier that is not properly constructed. You cannot say: another species, now extinct and THAT belonged. This is not a parallel construction as you start with an adjective and then put a “that” clause after it. (C) eliminates the problem in (B) by putting the “that” first but what follows after “extinct” is both illogical and improperly constructed. First, this construction illogically states that the fish is “now…belonging to a group” but it’s extinct! Perhaps more importantly, you cannot say: “another species that is belonging to a group” – it would need to be “another species that belongs to a group”.
Only (A) creates a logical construction with the extra modifier “now extinct” properly set off with commas.
