The line ax+b=y passes ( -2;0 ) and (0;1) then the line: (1/2)*x +1 = y
The line passes ( A;30) then A/2+1 =30 => A=58 the answer is A

From the diagram, you see that when the y co-ordinate increases by 1 (from (-2, 0) to ( 0 , 1)), the x co-ordinate increases by 2. So if the y co-ordinate will increase by another 29 (to be at 30), the x co-ordinate will increase by 29*2 = 58. So the line must pass through (58, 30)

Looking at the picture, the slope is 1/2.

y=(1/2)x + b
0=(1/2)(-2)+b
b=1

y=(1/2)x+1
30=(1/2)x+1
x=58

let's see the coordinates of the 2 points:
when x = 0, y = 1. This is y intercept, or b
when y = 0, x = -2. this is x intercept.

from coordinates of these two points, we can solve for slope of the line.
(1-0)/[0-(-2)] = 1/2

now, we can write the equation of the line
y = x/2 +1
we are given the coordinates of y (30)
let's plug in and solve for x:
30 = x/2 +1
29 = x/2
29*2 = x
x = 58.

MAGOOSH OFFICIAL SOLUTION:

The line appears to have a slope of ½ and y-intercept of 1, so its equation would be

y = 0.5x + 1

Plug in A for x and 30 for y.

30 = 0.5A + 1

29 = 0.5A

58 = A

Let's write down the points from the picture: (0,1) (-2,0)
1. We can find an equation with 2 points given: $$\frac{y-1}{x-0}= \frac{1-0}{0-(-2)}$$ --> $$y=\frac{1}{2}x+1$$
2. Insert (a,30) in the equation: $$30 = \frac{1}{2}x+1$$, and we'll get A=58 which is Answer A

Hi All,

This prompt can be solved in a variety of different ways, depending on which type of math you find easiest/fastest. There's also a relatively easy 'brute force' approach that you can use.

From the picture, we can see that the line follows a pattern - the line "goes up 1 for every 2 that you go to the right"...

(-2, 0)
(0, 1)
(2, 2)
(4, 3)
Etc.

We're asked to find the value of A at the point (A, 30). We can "count up" from (0,1).... 1 to 30 is 29 "steps" and 29(2) = 58.
