Hi,
First, I have to say that this thread and gmatclub on the whole rocks! This is such a great community, that too one with so many LBS admits! Congrats to all of you!

I'm rushing out the app for R2 - my profile is 28/WE of 5 years currently/CorpStrat for Big Media based in Hk

Would appreciate any thoughts on dealing with 2 big issues I have with my app - pretty limited ECAs and less-than-desired career growth as I switched out from boutique consulting into media, and am at the junior level despite the years of WE shown above. These 2 areas I understand would be pretty key for any app - would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi 4test 1, I have a few thoughts, though by no means consider it expert advice! Am an R2 applicant myself,so I'd leave you to pick out what makes most sense to you.

1) Limited ECs- This is something you cannot do much about right away.I would focus on whatever you have, and show either how you made a difference,or how they somehow helped your career and impact your goals/thinking.

2) Leadership to me is not restricted to "managing people" or titles-if you can show initiatives taken, impact on organization, new ideas proposed and executed you should be fine. Also,I assume your decision to start at an entry level position in Media ties in strongly with your goals,so that should only be an asset, not a problem.

Hope this helps!

Hi guys, I am new to gmatclub.

In any case, I am also waitlisted. I have been losing massive sleep for the for past 36 hours or so because of this purgatory-like feeling of half in half out dilemma.

I am currently writing this at the airport lounge in Beijing. Heading for London in a few hours to hopefully meet with Ad-coms on drop-in sessions the coming week.
(To make me feel worse, BA is on strike, and the weather in England is total shait)

In addition, thanks for bsd_lover, if the 65-70% conversion rate were true, I can, at least for now, be semi-relieved. However, I must note at the fact that on Business Week MBA forum, there are loads of waitlisters from last app season that didn't fare so well on conversions. There are, if i remembered correctly, only couple conversions (very late I must say, goodbye to scholarships there) and 3 defered-entry pre-admits for MBA2012.

Well, a big congratulation to ADMITS, I finally learned what jealousy means~ To the dingers, keep trying!

my background: Chinese, massive international experience, 38months at time of supposed matriculation @ telecom manufacturing/project management with Fortune 150 corporation. GMAT 740 v40q50. Top 10 Chinese Uni 4.0 GPA Management with Finance. 112 Toefl, fluent American English.

Hi Foncia, firstly,I think you have a fantastic profile.I;ve been reading threads back to back as well, and Bsd_lover's story may just as a well apply in your case too..though earlier we hope! Good luck and keep hangin' in there. As I said ,you've got a great profile, inspite of low work ex ,so that should really help.

Comrades,

Just wanted to introduce myself to the London Business School GMATClub thread, extend congratulations to all successful Stage 1 applicants, and wish all the best to those who were either assigned to Wait-lists or unsuccessful in this application. There's always hope!

I've been following this thread for about 7 months (used to follow the previous year's thread before till it concluded) and thought it would be helpful, for myself and for others, to participate in these conversations.

Everyone, thanks for coming out and sharing. I'm really surprised at the quality of applicants that have been waitlisted and denied.

@DrManhattan I'm presuming you're a R2 applicant ? I've added you to the list.

@Foncia, Wolfie, eowyn and other waitlisters - b-schools admission is a marathon. When you finally get admitted and attend school , you will be all the more stronger for it and the experience will be even sweeter.

@gnr - buddy I really feel for you - you did not deserve this - 2nd time waitlist just shows that you are really close and just need that extra push to get you over the line. Try to find what the extra push is - extra-curricular / leadership / overseas experience and try to demonstrate some of it during the wait.

R2 applicants - observe the high quality of folks who were denied and waitlisted in R1 and note that applications is a tough tough process. Leave nothing to chance. Get that extra polish on the essays and show that extra love for the school. But also realise that luck plays a role in these admits and that being dinged or waitlisted doesn't prove anything in terms of what your true capabilities are.

bsd_lover,

I'm actually a successful Stage 1 applicant. I resisted joining GMATClub till I completed all my applications and heard from all my first round schools; however, I have closely followed these threads for months.

I think the best piece of advice (based on my experience in this process) I could offer Stage 2 applicants is that they really need to understand London Business School, and why they want to go there, and that they can eloquently demonstrate this in their application essays. Application essays to top MBA programmes are always important, but I believe this importance is elevated to the level of "critical" when it comes to London Business School's MBA programme.

Do you homework! Be able to talk intelligently about courses you would find interesting, about clubs you would like to join (and this should make sense; for instance, stating an interest in the Korea Club without any professional, cultutal or personal ties to Korea or the Far East would seem, well, silly), and of current students and alumni you have interacted with in exploring the London Business School community, etcetera.

The London Business School essays are somewhat different from the standard fare of top American MBA programme applications. As such, you'll sell yourself very short if you attempt the cut and paste approach that appears to work quite well with other applications.

Finally, do not rest on your oars if and when you become short-listed for an interview. The numbers are hazy, but I believe the post-interview acceptance rate is somewhere between 50% and 70%. While this is not an overwhelmingly pessimistic number, you must realise that your new competition, while smaller, is stronger; the "weaker" (in the eyes of the Admissions Committee) have already been weeded out.

As the Stage 2 lot gears up to polish off their essays and their overall applications, I'd be happy to share any insights as to why I think my approach to the London Business School MBA application got me all the way through the process. I think this thread is an incredibly useful forum!

Hi DoctorManhattan
I am an R2 applicant and thank you for sharing your insights on LBS application process. I look forward to more insights from you. I think you should write in your profile that you are an LBS admit for the convenience of other members. Where else did you apply to and what was the outcome.

I also applied to Wharton and Kellogg and was accepted to both (with Kellogg offering generous financial consideration).

I'm always happy to share insights. I realise my previous post contained mostly general recommendations, but I'd be happy to address specific concerns or queries if you've got any.

I'm going to see if I can indicate that I have been admitted to London Business School in my profile.

P.S. It seems that the School brands itself either as "London Business School" or "The School"; it would do to remember this as you finalise your essays.

Good luck!

humblewinner,

Thanks for the congratulations! I appreciate it!

I believe I'll ultimately end up accepting the London Business School offer. I've always wanted a global MBA in a really global environment. The other American programmes I applied to are fantastic, but they don't come close to the sort of diversity I crave and would experience in London. Further, I'm not overly keen on excessively large MBA programmes that bear the distinct aura of MBA mass production, and have been convinced that such is not the vibe at London Business School; a close-knit community feeling prevails, so I'm told, which is more in line with my preferences for an MBA programme.

My profile: Male/700 GMAT/3.6 University GPA (American)/Finance Background (~4 years by matriculation in Wall Street Asset Management)/Extensive community involvement in the Greater New York area and during University/Published Author

Hey DoctorM,

I have been following some of your posts on other forums. I have been admitted too and I really look forward to meeting you in London! Congrats on all your other admissions; it's not easy to turn down Wharton and this is another sign of the strenght of LBS!

As for stage2 applicants, I would like to stress once more the importance of essays. For example, I have been admitted without having a stellar GMAT (710) and with only 2 years of WE by starting date. I am clearly an "outlier" if you look the typical class profile. However, good essays are THE MOST IMPORTANT factor, that can overcome low GMAT, short WE and so on.

As the contents of the essays, here are my advice:
1) Be specific and kind of pushy in telling why you do an MBA and what are your career goals. Do not just say "I'm doing an MBA because it's cool". Always connect the why MBA and why LBS with your career goals.
2) Try to do at your very best the "student club" essays. Concentrate on two clubs, name why you want to join them and cite examples of what they do. Show them that you did a lot of research on the clubs you want to join. Again, it may help to connect the clubs of you choice with your career goals
3) Don't be too formal in your essays. I was very conversational in my essays and in some parts they were "funny" I would say. This is also true when it comes to the interview. Show the guy that you know how to have fun and how to connect with people.

Hope this helps!

However, I have one question. When are the scolarships assigned?

Hi zib1,congratulations ! Thanks for the inputs.

I'm an R2 applicant, and I'm stuggling with outling my work ex in essay 1.My CV will contain the achievements in various roles so far,and the team work essay will contain leadershipship examples. As such, how should one approach outlining the work ex for the 1st essay? My problems are :
1) relating it to my goals, (as in work ex 1 gave me skill A to help my goal, work ex 2 has given me skill B for goal etc )makes it look weak without the leadership examples,

2) including leadership examples makes it repetitive with the other essay, plus increases word count

3)while building a story around why I chose certain jobs and roles makes it lengthy as then you have to include addtional bits on how it helped..

makes sense? what do you think?

Be careful; question number 1 asks you for present and past experience, not workexperience. In fact, I used two examples from work and one from extra-curricula activities.

For the rest, I used your 1) approach. I picked up three things from my experience that I believed were critical in achieving my goal. I did not really developed any leadership examples and stuffs like that since, as you already noticed, they are covered on other essays. It was more like; "In position X I achieved the skill Y. I master skill Y and I believe is fundamental in achieving my goal Z."

Cheers!
