Hello everyone,
Just found this thread. Wish I had found it earlier. Need some expert opinion. I am a medical doctor and looking for a career in investment banking. I am a EU citizen but would be happy to work in any major city of Europe or US post MBA as long as I get a foot into the IB. Which school do you think is more likely to help me get the foot in? LBS or Chicago Booth?

Both schools are great for IB, but i would prefer LBS mainly because of the London location where u have better opportunities for internships as well as to build strong networks in the ib field... u can consider Columbia as well

if u looking to stay in europe, lbs is maybe a better bet..but when i say this..doing it frm any of the strong US 'finance' schools will get you a foot in as well - if thts wt ur looking for ..

a host of these US schools do a london banking trip together..i m nt sure if there r others on the list but the following ones r def thre - booth, wharton, stern, columbia, harvard...so i-banks host these schools together...networking events r together, etc etc...the next step is similar to the usual banking recruitment where they interview u if they like u...u dont hav to travel more than that one banking trip to secure the internship..n then all depends on hw well u do in ur internship to grab the fulltime offer

a perspective given to me by a US school student was tht thre r fewer ppl frm ur school competing for the banking positions, so the 'foot in' part is a lot easier...perspective given by an lbs guy was tht thre r only 2-3 positions per bank per yr for US schools...whreas thre r many more for european schools n lbs being one of the better ones around takes a fair chunk (no particular % or nos given am afraid)...

my 2 cents (so fashionable to say it!)..as ur frm europe n am sure u wud b knowing atleast another european language, u wud b well suited to go to either side of the pond n still get a foot in...but longer term if n when u r lookin to get out of banking, LBS may giv u more recognition in europe than a booth (nt meant to b an argument on whos better..as both are fantastic schools)

Interview debrief below >
My interview was scheduled for 10 AM at the interviewer's office. I reached about 15 mins early.

He was in on a Saturday only to conduct LBS interviews. Just glad that mine was the first. Entire interview was conversational in nature and did not feel like a question-answer session at all - especially when I compare it to some of the other schools I have interviewed with in the past.

Questions asked were -

1) Where are you in the application process?...This was the first question and was a veiled manner of asking how are you doing on the other schools' front because he obviously knew where I was in the LBS process!

2) Explain a typical day in your job. Follow-up questions to understand my job/responsibilities better

3) Why MBA? Strangely enough no Why LBS and other LBS specific questions..thankfully factored Why LBS into the Why MBA answer...so that possibly averted the follow up question of Why LBS

4) Explain your leadership style

5) Weaknesses?

6) Professional failure/setback?

7) Any issues when working with diverse international teammates?

8) Presentation time - Given a simple enough topic and 5 minutes to prepare. I think I did more than okay on that. Not really a worry angle. (going to avoid mentioning the topic after the earlier discussion...suggestion to others to avoid as well if possible...think they have a set of only 10 to 20 topics)

9) Any questions for me? Asked him 2-3 questions.

The shocking part was that the interview ended in 40 mins flat - but later realised it possibly had to do with the fact that someone was lined up to interview after me. Also, the interviewer was not wasting any time on going through the stuff he had already seen in my essays/application/resume.

Cheekily asked him if he had any feedback for me at the end and he said "No" with a cheekier smile! Lol!

Wait till the 15th now. To get my mind off the nervous waiting - onto the next one. But some serious FIFA11 to be played before ;)

From your side, you're safe as long as your updating your LBS coordinator on the reasons of postponing the interview!
You should also make it clear for your interviewer that you have a deadline of 30th Nov... it's like you're putting pressure on him in a professional way (respecting deadlines;)

Good Luck! ... trust me, after the interview is a tougher "waiting" period

Here is my bit:

1) Tell me about yourself
2) Why LBS? - I told them about my goals and why MBA and specifically LBS.
3) Why substitute learning at work with learning during MBA? (He said I have an impressive resume and it seems I have learned from best institute & great organization & now leading my biz - he felt it would be good to learn while I continue in my biz)
4) Who will takeover the biz in my absence?

Now comes the oddball question -- He wanted to discuss short-term challenges that my country faces. Well, I have not been in touch with current economic & political events, so I rambled a bit but then I had good know-how of global economy & long-term challenges & prospects and therefore was able to at least showcase my awareness.

He moved on to talk about challenging tasks at work.

Now, during my turn I was really confused because he has been out of school for 18 years now and he feel that MBA has not helped him much professionally except broadening his horizon and exposure etc etc.. That hurts.. So, I am now wondering what he would write about my motivation. I did convinced him on my reasons to do an MBA.. He was not sure initially (as I said he thinks MBA would not add much value to someone who wants to return back to biz) but then I explained him well and he was convinced..

Presentation was simple and I did pretty well with short and sweet but really good point..

All in all a good discussion with only concern being his personal opinion that may show on my report..

dont think too much abt it man..u convinced him abt ur reasons and tht shud suffice..it cud hav been worse..i had a terrible experience last yr rt at the start of an interview whre the interviewer disagreed with me and was not convinced abt my goals as well...tht gt me all flustered and the rest of the interview was a nightmare...

personal opinions and prejudices are all part and parcel of the b-school admissions process..u can only giv it ur best shot n then hope for the best...

Hi everyone!
Sorry I haven't had the chance to read the whole thread so I apologize in advance if this question has already been asked. I'm thinking of applying to the 2nd round but I'm running out of time and I'm wondering if I should not delay my application to the 3rd round. If I decide to do so I'm afraid that my chances of getting in would decrease dramatically. So what do you think? hurry up and finish the application for round 2? or take more time and submit for round 3? Another option would be to apply next year round 1 but I'm not too enthusiastic about this idea. I read somewhere that since LBS has 4 rounds the 3rd round is not as bad as if there were only 3 rounds.
Thanks for your help!

Wow. Thats very impressive! Thanks for the report tmino!

I was however wondering how the year end bonus numbers are calculated considering the Class of 2010 has not finished a year on their job yet. Do those numbers represent the maximum eligibility for the bonus?

Still another week to go for the final decisions. An excruciating wait...:)

Why is that a trick? Technically, many have incorporated business and have themselves listed as employees (for tax and visa reasons). I personally know many of them. And since when is entrepreneurship not counted as work??? They put in way more hours than anyone in Industry. Entrepreneurs are the professionals I admire the most!

I think the 8% should be highlighted even more, it's something a school with a Finance heavy reputation can and should be proud of.

I know somebody that has been called today by the Adcom to check the English level...

any of you guys has been also called by an Admission Committee this week?
My wife was called last Monday.

Not sure if this is good or bad news. Of course is not good that they have doubts about the English level (toefl 105), but well at least she is still on the race.

Questions the AdCom asked:
"Do you feel confident with your actual English level?"
"Would you accept to take some English courses before the program starts if admitted?" "Have you been in London before?"
"What do you do out of work?"
"Do you have any question?"

The thing is that the AdCom called like 15 times during the last week when my wife was working and she couldn't answer the phone, and the number appeared as "unknown" so my wife couldn't call back. And of course the last thing she thought is that it was a call from the LBS AdCom....

At the end this Monday she picked the phone in a bad moment and by surprise, got nervous and her answers weren't great....
