The mayor of the city recently announced the construction of seventeen high-rise buildings in and around the area of Mira road, a northern suburb of Mumbai. The construction of these new buildings will create a large amount of pollution, a nuisance for residents who live near the construction sites. However, many of the residents in the neighborhood work in civil and mechanical construction, and the contract to construct the buildings has been tendered to a local construction company. So, the construction of the buildings will lead to an increased quality of life for the residents of Mira road.
So here in this argument there's definitely a gap. The harm suggested in the argument which talks about the pollution and the conclusion that talks about the increased quality of life for the residents of the Mira road.
Now is the assumption of the argument that the construction workers dont have to travel that might possibly lead to the increase in pollution ?
Or
the construction of the new building will not contribute to the increase in the pollution
Let me know if my thinking is correct??

Hi squad700, First of all, let's understand what an Assumption really is. An assumption is an unstated set of information which the author has assumed to come to the conclusion.
So coming to your first question
Now coming to the second assumption
According to me, the assumption the author makes here is that all the local residents in the neighborhood who work in civil and mechanical construction work for the local construction company who has won the tender.

The argument in discussion here clearly states that "The construction of these new buildings will create a large amount of pollution". Hence the above version can never be the assumption as it negates the premise itself.
Now coming to the second assumption

Again this can not be the conclusion as in the conclusion the author talks about the quality of life of construction workers and not about the pollution. Pollution is just a piece of extra information provided in the premise which does not affect the conclusion in any way.
