The ministry asserts that improvements in sentiment indicators are evidence that the economy will dodge the uncertainty that had been caused earlier by the euro debt crisis and instead grow by 1.8 percent in 2014.

'Rather' expresses a preference for the first option over the second but does not exclude it from consideration.

'Instead' expresses the choice of the first option to the exclusion of the second.

Hence, all sentences ending with rather can be cancelled out immediately.

A. that the economy will dodge the uncertainty that had been caused earlier by the euro debt crisis and instead grow.ANSWER

B. in the economy to dodge the uncertainty, what the euro debt crisis caused earlier, rather to grow.

C. in the economy's ability to dodge the uncertainty, something earlier the euro debt crisis caused, and instead to grow. X weird and wordy

D.in the economy to dodge the uncertainty the euro debt crisis caused earlier, and rather to growX

E. that the economy will dodge the uncertainty the euro debt crisis had caused earlier, with it instead growing. X 'it' ambiguous

Competition Mode Question

The ministry asserts that improvements in sentiment indicators are evidence that the economy will dodge the uncertainty that had been caused earlier by the euro debt crisis and instead grow by 1.8 percent in 2014.

(A) that the economy will dodge the uncertainty that had been caused earlier by the euro debt crisis and instead grow

(B) in the economy to dodge the uncertainty, what the euro debt crisis caused earlier, rather to grow

(C) in the economy's ability to dodge the uncertainty, something earlier the euro debt crisis caused, and instead to grow

(D) in the economy to dodge the uncertainty the euro debt crisis caused earlier, and rather to grow

(E) that the economy will dodge the uncertainty the euro debt crisis had caused earlier, with it instead growing

Official Explanation

Creating a filter: when we read the prompt, maybe it has no error, so we go on to the answer choices.

Applying the filter: we have a 2 versus 3 grouping in how the answer choices begin. We are talking about evidence that supports a claim; the best way to introduce the claim is with the word "that." That leaves us with (A) and (E). Choice (E) has an objectionable phrase "with it instead growing." "With" is not properly a conjunction, and it's being used as one here. We review (B) through (D) to establish further that the wording is awkward, beyond the problem with them already mentioned.

The correct answer is (A).
