The obviously bitter actress stated that had the director known what he was doing, the play would have run for more than one night.

(A) had the director known what he was doing, the play would have run (Correct)
(B) if the director would have known what he was doing, the play would have run (Need past perfect tense in the "If Clause")
(C) if the director had known what he was doing, they would run (Usage of would have is correct)
(D) had the director known what he was doing, they would run (Same as C)
(E) if the director knew what he was doing, they would have run (Usage of only 'would' is correct)

Kudos please if you like my explanation!

No grammatical errors in the sentence. KEEP!

Quote:
(B) if the director would have known what he was doing, the play would have run

'If' construction requires the use of past perfect tense, so 'would' is incorrect.
The one in red should be 'had known' to be correct.

Quote:
(C) if the director had known what he was doing, they would run
(D) had the director known what he was doing, they would run
(E) if the director knew what he was doing, they would have run

'they' has no antecedent, so all three of these options are OUT.

So A is the answer.
