I feel C should be the answer, B when negated doesn't solve the assumption

[*](A) The popular press is not unanimous in its recommendations...
  • Irrelevant. The argument is about the effect of following health advice, not about whether the press agrees.

[*](B) The anxiety produced by disregarding journalists' advice is less than that produced by attempting to heed it.
  • This directly supports the argument. If ignoring advice caused equal or more anxiety, then the argument’s conclusion (that ignoring is better) would fall apart.

[*](C) Most sources of dealing with personal anxiety are themselves anxiety-inducing.
  • Too broad and unrelated to the specific argument about health advice.

[*](D) A significant proportion of people who try to avoid risks cannot avoid them completely.
  • This might explain frustration but doesn't establish that following advice is worse than ignoring it.

[*](E) Journalists use needlessly alarming language.
  • Even if true, this doesn't necessarily prove that following advice is worse than ignoring it

Option B directly supports the conclusion by assuming that ignoring advice leads to less anxiety (and therefore less health risk) than following it.

The popular press continually advises people to avoid various health risks. Yet by seeking to avoid health risks, people inevitably become anxious, and anxiety, in turn, poses a health risk. Thus, paradoxical as it seems, simply disregarding journalists' advice about reducing health risks is bound to pose less of a health risk than does trying to follow any such advice.

The given argument assumes which of the following?

A) The popular press is not unanimous in its recommendations to people wishing to avoid various health risks.
B) The anxiety, if any, produced by disregarding generalists' advice to avoid health risks is less than that produced by attempting to heed this advice.
C) Most sources of dealing with personal anxiety are themselves anxiety inducinng.
D) A significant proportion of the people who, following generalists' advice, seek to avoid specific health risks cannot avoid those risks completely.
E) Journalists who advise people to avoid various health risks render their advice in needlessly alarming language.
