One of the biggest mistakes on an MBA resume? Not quantifying your achievements.
I usually work through 4-5 rounds of resume revisions with candidates, and sometimes even up to 10+ iterations! This process pushes you to think deeply about your work and impact, and one element that’s crucial is quantifying your achievements.
Numbers help bring your achievements to life.
Instead of just saying you "led a project", show the impact or result. This is equally important for consulting resumes, where tangible results can make all the difference.
Here are 5 ways to effectively quantify your impact:
- Think about the result: What changed because of your work? Increased revenue? Reduced costs? Growing customers? Show % improvements where applicable, and leverage KPIs.
- Competitive benchmarks: Highlight how your work outperformed previous results or industry averages. For example, "Cut processing time by X%, reducing delays from Y to Z days."
- Frequency, Scope and Scale: How often did you do an activity? How many people were impacted? What was the budget? Did you expand operations, clients, or teams?
- Stakeholder & leadership influence: Show how your work led to executive buy-in, partnerships, or strategic decisions. For example, "Developed a proposal that secured $5M in funding from senior leadership."
- Talent Development & Team Growth: Did you train, mentor, or lead a team that showed measurable improvement? For example, "Mentored 5 analysts and coached them on the team's processes, 2 of whom were promoted within a year.”
Here’s an example of how the same point can be strengthened with numbers:
❌ Before: "Led marketing campaigns for a product launch."
✅ After: "Drove a 15% increase in sales, reaching 10K+ customers in 3 months, by leading two end-to-end marketing campaigns for a product launch."
