The quality of early pieces of blown glass excavated in Italy and Western Europe by far surpass those of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, when regarded not only in terms of the variety of shapes represented, but also in terms of decorative techniques and functionality.

(A) by far surpass those of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, when regarded not only in terms of

(B) surpasses by far those from the eastern Mediterranean, with regard not only to

(C) far surpass that of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, not only regarding

(D) far surpasses that of the eastern Mediterranean, with regard to not only

(E) far surpasses that of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, not only with regard to

Hi BrentGMATPrepNow, could you clarify not only...but also from B ~ E? as thought not only in terms of...but also in terms of in A is the most parallel in all choices? Thanks Brent

Hello Kimberly77,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your question, in Option B, the prepositional phrase "with regard" is placed outside the "not only A but B" construction, leading to a break in parallelism; Option E maintains parallelism between A (with regards to the variety of shapes represented) and B (in terms of decorative techniques and functionality).

We hope this helps.
All the best!

Thanks ExpertsGlobal5, make sense now especially E. However why "not only in terms of...but also in terms of" in A not correct? Thanks

Hello Kimberly77,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, Option A does not have an error in the use of "not only A but also B"; Option A incorrectly refers to the singular noun "quality" with the plural verb "surpass" and the plural pronoun "those".

We hope this helps.

Beautiful problem.

Problem: The quality of early pieces of blown glass excavated in Italy and Western Europe by far surpass those of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, when regarded not only in terms of the variety of shapes represented, but also in terms of decorative techniques and functionality.

(A) by far surpass those of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, when regarded not only in terms of
- Subject-Verb Error: "The quality ... by far surpass" | Mistake: number mismatch
- Pronoun Error: "The quality" <> "those" | Mistake: number mismatch

(B) surpasses by far those from the eastern Mediterranean, with regard not only to
- Pronoun Error: "The quality" <> "those" | Mistake: number mismatch

(C) far surpass that of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, not only regarding
- Subject-Verb Error: "The quality ... by far surpass" | Mistake: number mismatch

(D) far surpasses that of the eastern Mediterranean, with regard to not only
- Meaning Error: "that" refers to "the quality"; Thus the meaning of the second part is wrong: "The quality of the eastern Mediterranean".

(E) far surpasses that of pieces from the eastern Mediterranean, not only with regard to
