Hey buddy,
Simple gerund phrases are those that are noun from outside but verb from inside. To make the point more simpler, consider this example
Raising voice can be bad for the throat, here Raising voice is a simple gerund( verb + ing used as noun) however, the word Raising voice is still simple and can be used in verb form also such as
you are raising voice unnecessarily. ( used as verb)
however, the complex gerund is noun through and through, thus can't be used as verb.

the subject "has created " a growing opportunity ...

Therefore, subject must be singular.

Simple Gerund : Drinking tea is healthy.
Watching TV makes you stupid.

Complex Gerund : The rising cost
The watching of TV
The sleeping on the bed.

I could not really come up with good examples , but in parallel questions you can parallel complex gerunds with action nouns .

"The watching of TV and consumption of tea " is more preferable than " Watching TV and consumption of tea "

Hai thank you very much for your explanations. I have another doubt:

noun phrase : It includes noun and its modifiers
simple gerund phrase: verb+ ing. We can easily a sentence with ver+ing as a wroking verb.

1) Rising inventories:
"inventories" is noun and "rising" is adjective modifying noun "inventories".
rising (verb+ ing): X , a business man, is rising inventories in his warehouse. ( verb+ ing is used as working verb).
is "rising inventories " noun phrase and simple gerund phrase?

2)Having good friends
having (verb+ing) . "good friends" is noun and is "having" adjective?
"having good friends" is noun phrase or gerund phrase?

Rising inventories : The head inventories is accompanied by the simple gerund rising as its modifier.

Verbal phrase : A noun that is derived from a verb (usually by adding the suffix -ing) and that exhibits the ordinary properties of a noun. (http://grammar.about.com/od/tz/g/verbalnounterm.htm)

Having good friends is a verbal noun with simple gerund.
