(C) for me. Time taken 0:57.

"the determination of the authenticity" is a composite subject and thus takes the singular verbs "is" and "needs". On that basis, you can strike off (A), (D) and (E).

Between (B) and (C), usage of "like" in (B) to present examples is incorrect. "such as" preferred over "like" to present examples and as "Da Vinci" here is depicted as an example of "renaissance-era painters"; therefore, the usage of "such as" in (C) is correct.

My answer is (C). It took me 01:08.

(AE) "The determination" (singular) does not agree with "need".
(BD) To provide example(s), use "such as" as opposed to "like". "Like", when used as a preposition, is used for comparison.

A) painters such as Da Vinci is usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but need
"determination of authenticity"... "is"... "but need" need should be needs because subject is singular

B) painters like Da Vinci is usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but needs
like is used for comparison ,whereas the goal here is to give an an example painter

C) painters such as Da Vinci is usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but needs
Correct

D) painters like Da Vinci are usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but needs
like is used for comparison ,whereas the goal here is to give an an example painter. Also "are" is wrong subject is singular "determination of authenticity"

E) painters such as Da Vinci are usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but need
"determination of authenticity"... "is"... "but need" need should be needs because subject is singular. Also "are" is wrong subject is singular "determination of authenticity"

The sense of elitism in the art world is deepened by the fact that the determination of the authenticity of long-lost works of reputed renaissance-era painters such as Da Vinci is usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but need the expert “eye” of the connoisseurs.

A) painters such as Da Vinci is usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but need
SV agreement error..--> 'the determination of the authenticty' doesn't agree with plural verb "need"

B) painters like Da Vinci is usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but needs
like needs to be replaced by 'such as' , since this is a case wherein a specific example of painters, that is, Da Vinci is referred

C) painters such as Da Vinci is usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but needs
CORRECT..use of such as is appropriate; simultaneouly no SV agreement error

D) painters like Da Vinci are usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but needs
like needs to be replaced by 'such as' , since this is a case wherein a specific example of painters, that is, Da Vinci is referred; besides there is also SV agreement error --> 'the determination of the authenticty' doesn't agree with plural verb "are"

E) painters such as Da Vinci are usually not possible by just scientific analysis and forensics but need
SV agreement error..--> 'the determination of the authenticty' doesn't agree with plural verb "need"

C is the CORRECT answer..

Hope it helps..
