Hey there, MBA hopefuls! If you're eyeing Columbia Business School's MBA program, you might have noticed a tweak to Essay #3.
Over the last few years, Columbia asked prospective students, "
Why do you feel Columbia Business School is a good fit for you academically, culturally, and professionally? (300 words)"This year, they're asking, "
How would you co-create your optimal MBA experience at CBS? Please be specific. (250 words)." They've not only cut the word count by 50 words, but they’ve also created a more ambiguous prompt. By adding this new idea of "co-creating" your MBA experience, Columbia is obviously telling candidates that they don't just want you to list classes, clubs, and programs you're interested in. CBS is nudging applicants to think beyond how the program will help them reach their goals and into how they'll roll up their sleeves to enrich and contribute to the entire Columbia community. This is the approach I have been telling my clients to take for years. Columbia does not just want to see what you're going to take from the program, but also what you're going to ADD to the program. This is a two-way street.
So, what does this mean for you? Well, instead of just listing classes, clubs, resources, etc, that will help you reach your career dreams, Columbia wants you to show how you'll bring something extra to the table. Think about how your background, skills, values, or even your wild ideas can make a real impact on campus life and beyond.
Picture yourself not just as a student but as a key player in a dynamic team of future leaders. How can you contribute? Maybe it's through your knack for problem-solving, your unique perspective on global markets, or your plans to start a new club that brings students together over your interest in AI.
This shift isn't just about ticking boxes; it's about painting a vivid picture of how you'll collaborate, inspire, and innovate to impact the community during your time at Columbia. They're looking for folks who are ready to dive in, share ideas fearlessly, and leave a lasting mark on their peers and the business world.
So, as you brainstorm your Essay 3, think about what makes you stand out not just as an individual achiever but as someone who's itching to co-create something special. Columbia isn't just offering an education; they're inviting you to be part of a vibrant community where your contributions can truly make a difference.
