Re: The sport of tennis develops muscular strength, sharpens coordination [#permalink]

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The sport of tennis develops muscular strength, sharpens coordination, and provides good cardiovascular exercise. However, it can strain joints especially in the knee, elbow and wrist area. Despite this drawback, tennis should be played by anyone attracted to it because of its possible benefits to physical health.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the author's conclusion?

(A) Tennis is played on a variety of surfaces on outdoor courts or indoor sporting facilities.

Incorrect.

To solve this Conclusion Strengthening question, first break down the argument. The first two sentences are premises which provide factual data; the last sentence is a recommendation (should), i.e., the conclusion:

Premise A: tennis develops physical health in a number of ways
    +
Premise B: in one way (by straining joints), tennis can also damage health
    =
Conclusion: the positive health benefits of tennis outweigh the negative physical effects

Possible assumption: the drawbacks of tennis aren't that bad; or they can easily be healed or prevented

    Strengthening Data: ?

You are required to find data that supports the statement that tennis is good for physical health even though it can cause injury. The correct answer could be one that confirms the argument's assumption.

This answer choice neither supports nor weakens the conclusion because the argument does not involve the facilities used in the sport of tennis. Focus on the conclusion, and search for a statement that strengthens it.

(B) The earnings of professional tennis players are the highest of any professional sport.

Incorrect.

This answer choice neither supports nor weakens the conclusion because the argument does not involve the financial aspect of the sport of tennis. Focus on the conclusion, and search for a statement that strengthens it.

(C) Damage to joints is extremely difficult to repair and may affect one's mobility for extended periods of time.

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion whereas you are required to find a statement that supports it. The conclusion recommends the playing of tennis so emphasizing its negative effects will not get you to the right answer.

(D) Tennis is a sport that is growing in many countries around the world.

Incorrect.

This answer choice neither supports nor weakens the conclusion because the argument does not involve the aspect of the popularity of the sport of tennis. Focus on the conclusion, and search for a statement that strengthens it.

(E) Stretching exercises, warm-up and professional consultation can prevent serious physical harm that can be caused by any sport.

The argument presents tennis in a positive light, but not without telling us about one of its drawbacks - straining the joints. By providing solutions to this drawback, this answer choice supports the conclusion that tennis should be played by anyone who wants to play it.
