The total number of musicians, not counting soloists, whom the SSO must contract for the entire spring season is 97. => Yes

Take the highest number in each instrument column
  • Woodwinds: 16
  • Brass: 16
  • Percussion: 3
  • Strings: 62
=> Total is 97

The average number of strings required by the compositions in the program for Performance C is smaller than the average number of strings required by the compositions in the program of either of the other two performances. => Yes

Sort by Performance
  • there are 3 compositions in each Performance
  • the total number of strings required in each Performance
    • C: 54 + 21 + 31 = 106
    • A: 51 + 21 + 45 = 117
    • B: 62 + 51 + 21 = 134
=> The total number of strings for C is smaller than that of either A and B
All performances have the same number of compositions
=> The avg number of strings for C is smaller than the avg of A and B

If a composition requires 8 woodwinds, the probability that it was not composed by Sanford, M. is 33%. => No

Sort by Woodwinds, there are 3 compositions requiring 8 woodwinds, 2 of which are not composed by Sanford M
