I am still learning, so please take this comment with a pinch of salt.

- All the calculations need not be done, a ballpark number might help. Since I read that GMAT's onscreen calculator wouldn't allow you to use keyboard, be very specific in what you want to use calc for (unless you are a pro at using a calculator using the mouse).

- Question 1 in this - sort using months - Do an approximate calculation of numbers in Aug vs Sep + Oct + Nov OR try to observe that highest in August is 715 + 238 which will surpass the total of S + O + Nov (requires some estimation for sure)

- Question 2- Sort the table by reported cases - take first five and rest of the entries - instead of calculating the total number observe that five (deaths) occurs in both data set (so immaterial for the comparison), now you can choose to add the smaller numbers and compare or go ahead and cancel further to figure out that latter data set (the rest of the entries) - have 2 more deaths thus making the overall statement false.

- Question 3 - This was tricky for me. I estimated the answer as Yes based on the numbers compared
>> However, If I am to redo, I will calculate. (you can simplify the calculations further based on the numbers observed in the dataset)

ShashwataKapoor I dont think you have to think this far in this question. While DI questions do require Critical thinking, its mostly for extracting the data from the dataset and making meaningful inferences. This kind of Critical thinking is more useful in CR, IMO.

Coming to your question -
Quote:
The table displays 16 separate outbreaks of foodborne disease by the month in which the first reported case occurred, it does not state that all the cases occurred in that month only, they could have happened in later months also
The dataset is only concerned about the (reported) cases mentioned for a particular month. Since the extrapolated data isn't given, GMAC test makers wouldn't set a question that asks us to extrapolate data like this and make calculations on the extrapolated data.

For each of the following statements, select Yes if the statement can be shown to be true using the information provided. Otherwise, select No.

There were more reported cases of foodborne illness in August than in September, October, and November combined.YES
August = 39+238+715 = 992
Sep+Oct+Nov = 545

Over half of the deaths attributed to foodborne illness were due to the five outbreaks with the greatest number of reported cases.NO
Total Deaths = 20
Five Greatest Outbreaks = 715 - 238 - 192 - 190 - 177
Deaths In respective outbreaks = 0 - 5 - 1 - 3 - 0 = 9

The proportion of reported cases in May and June that eventually required hospitalization exceeded 10 percent.YES
Total Cases in May & June = 177+190+13+156 = 536
Total Hospitalizations in May & June = 2+47+13+15 = 77
The table displays 16 separate outbreaks of foodborne disease by the month in which the first reported case occurred, it does not state that all the cases occurred in that month only, they could have happened in later months also. Please let me know if my approach is justified and if the change in the answer is due to the same.
