The technological conservatism of art supply manufacturers is a reflection of the kinds of demands they are trying to meet. The only customers who are seriously interested in purchasing new products are professional artists. Therefore, innovation in art supply technology is limited by what art critics and gallery owners accept as a proper medium of expression for artists.

Which of the following is an assumption made in drawing the conclusion above?

A. The market for cheap traditional art supplies cannot expand unless the market for new art products expands.

B. New art products are likely to be improved more as a result of technological innovations developed in small workshops than as a result of technical innovations developed in major manufacturing concerns.

C. Professional artists do not generate a strong demand for innovations that fall outside what is officially recognized as a standard medium for purposes of artistic creations.

D. The technological conservatism of art supply manufacturers results primarily from their desire to manufacture a product that can be sold without being altered to suit different national markets.

E. The critics and gallery owners who set standards for high-quality art do not keep themselves informed about innovations in art supplies.

A. The market for cheap traditional art supplies cannot expand unless the market for new art products expands................irrelevant

B. New art products are likely to be improved more as a result of technological innovations developed in small workshops than as a result of technical innovations developed in major manufacturing concerns.........................Where they are being developed is quite irrelevant

C. Professional artists do not generate a strong demand for innovations that fall outside what is officially recognized as a standard medium for purposes of artistic creations.................correctly connects statement two and conclusion

D. The technological conservatism of art supply manufacturers results primarily from their desire to manufacture a product that can be sold without being altered to suit different national markets...................... Out of scope

E. The critics and gallery owners who set standards for high-quality art do not keep themselves informed about innovations in art supplies............................. irrelevant

ARGUMENT
[con] Art tech is ltd by what critics and owners accept as a medium of expression for artists;
[prem] Only interested customers in new products are pros;
[prem] And tech conservatism of manufacturers is a reflection of the demands they're trying to meet;
[asum] Pros don't generate enough demand to be accepted by others as a proper medium of expression.

There is an obvious jump between "professional artists" as decision makers in premise to "art critics and gallery owners" - in conclusion.

Quote:
A. The market for cheap traditional art supplies cannot expand unless the market for new art products expands.

The argument is not concerned at all about 'the market for cheap traditional art supplies" (it only talks about innovative supplies) as well as its ability to expand.

Quote:
B. New art products are likely to be improved more as a result of technological innovations developed in small workshops than as a result of technical innovations developed in major manufacturing concerns.

Predictions about the future cannot be an assumption.

Quote:
C. Professional artists do not generate a strong demand for innovations that fall outside what is officially recognized as a standard medium for purposes of artistic creations.

That's the one! Correct choice. If negate it, the conclusion will be broken.

Quote:
D. The technological conservatism of art supply manufacturers results primarily from their desire to manufacture a product that can be sold without being altered to suit different national markets.

The motivation of art supply manufacturers is not a concern.

Quote:
E. The critics and gallery owners who set standards for high-quality art do not keep themselves informed about innovations in art supplies.

Same as D, this is not a concern. If we negate option E, it does not impact the conclusion anyhow.

The right answer is option C in my view.

Premise 1: The technological conservatism of art supplies manufacturers reflects the kind of demand they are trying to meet.
Premise 2: The only customers who are seriously interested in new products are professional artists.
Conclusion: Innovation in art supply technology is limited by what art critics and gallery owners accept as a proper medium of expression for artists.

For the conclusion to hold, it has to be assumed that professional artists are the art critics and gallery owners, and that they are conservative about what they consider as an acceptable medium of expression for art.

Option C states that Professional artists do not generate a strong demand for innovations that fall outside what is officially recognized as a standard medium for purposes of artistic creations. This is a variant of what is stated above. Negating option C: Some Professional artists generate a strong demand for innovations that fall outside what is officially recognized as a standard medium for purposes of artistic creations. If this negated statement is true, then the argument falls apart. Hence C has to be a necessary assumption on which the argument above depends upon.

IMO Option D

Only option that says there is no restriction on the medium of expression for artists as the products that art manufacturers produce can be sold to different national markets without altering it.
Hence their innovation (expression of their artists) is good enough to serve large number of artists across many nations

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Correct Answer: C

If professional artists, the only customers interested in innovation, created a strong demand for innovations for purposes other than what is officially recognized as a standard medium for purposes of artistic creations, then the conclusion would not follow. Therefore, choice C, which states that professional artists generate no such demand is assumed and is the best answer.
