The two oil companies agreed to merge their refining and marketing operations in the Midwest and the West, forming a new company for controlling nearly fifteen of the nation’s gasoline sales.

(A) forming a new company for controlling
(B) forming a new company that would control
(C) which would form a new company that controlled
(D) which formed a new company for controlling
(E) which formed a new company that would control

GMATNinja

A) meaning suggests that the merger was only for controlling the gasoline sales.merger could have other benefits also.i didn't chose option A just for this reason. could you please check whether i am correct.is there any other grammatical error in option A?

Thanks & Regards
First of all, the question seems to have a typo: "... nearly fifteen [percent?] of the nation's gasoline sales." This sentence was also apparently taken straight from a news article, leading me to question whether this is an actual GMATPrep question. If anybody has seen it in the actual GMATPrep software, please let us know?

Regardless, I think your analysis is spot on! The new company would control nearly fifteen [percent?] of the nation’s gasoline sales, but it was not formed for the sole purpose of controlling nearly fifteen [percent?] of the nation’s gasoline sales. So (A) doesn't contain a clear grammar error, but the meaning is definitely off.

I hope that helps!

CDE wrong due to: which can't refer to the whole IC in GMAT. So SVO, V-ing is the choice;
Preposition for is wrong here. intention/purpose: to+verb or that-clause.

Do "which" in C D E modify West?? i always get confused with this which type question please help...
Hi Abhishek, you are right. For the most part, which modifies the nearest grammatically eligible word and that word, in this case, is West.

Also, just to understand what "which" should actually be modifying, we can ask this question:

What would form a new company?

Answer: merger

The word merger is not even present in the sentence. Hence, there is actually nothing meaningful that which can modify here.

p.s. Our book EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana discusses modifier issues of "which", their application and examples in significant detail. If you or someone is interested, PM me your email-id; I can mail the corresponding section.
