The members of the House of Commons were unlikely to be won over by appeals to Christian morality or human compassion: they “no more dreamt of a seat in the House in order to benefit humanity than a child dreams of a birthday cake that others may eat it.”
The first part means they were not looking forward to help humanity anymore. what does the second part(the comparison) mean?

The members of the House of Commons were unlikely to be won over by appeals to Christian morality or human compassion: they “no more dreamt of a seat in the House in order to benefit humanity than a child dreams of a cake that others may eat it.”
The comparison means that they did not attain their position in the House of Commons to benefit humanity but rather themselves.
