Btw, the Chinese will try to bring an Olympic torch to the summit in May 2008. So if I do it, I also will be able to participate a little bit in the Olympic games :)

They simply won't let you do so. Even volunteering for the Olympics is almost completely off limits for foreigners! Bringing the Olympic torch to the summit is an impossible undertaking for a laowai.

You will get into any b-school, if you manage to participate in that event.

Here is one more regret:

1. I am not Mao Zedong's son.

I am not going to take away the torch from the Chinese guys :) But I may be very close (50-100 meters) to them when they take the torch to the summit or I may even stand side by side to the guys with the torch on the summit. That's what I mean :)

I want to summit it, i.e. to reach the top at 8848 meters above the sea level - the cruising altitude of Boeing 707 :)

You have no idea how much I want to do that. Unfortunately, I won't be able to afford it for some time :-(

money? :)

I've been planning this since 2001 and had to postpone from 2005 :( That was really painful to read the summit stories for 3 years and not to participate :)

$14K - $70K depending on the number of sherpas, guides, delivery of weight to the high altitude camps etc. I know how to do it with only $14K (not including the flights and the minimal necessary climbing gear which will roughly cost additional 3.5-4 K) but the success of the climb will entirely depend on the climbers' devotion. Those who dream about it are usually devoted :)

Btw, the risks of guided and unguided climbs are usually the same (see Truth#3 at https://www.mounteverest.net/news.php?news=16540). So you do not risk a lot when you save $50K on unguided climbs. But this, of course, is not for those who have never tried climbing - for them the risks increase substantially.

What else? My Indian-IT salary is NOT enough to do $14K to $70K climbing expeditions. Any of you soon-to-be-very-rich 07-ers here kind enough to *lend* me some?!? ;-)

That could also be time - as in my case. Sometimes you just can't afford 1-1.5 months out of your work schedule.

However, I will also have to work harder to raise enough funds in 6 months :)

Still finishing up my undergrad.... here are mine already:

1. Wish I would have taken High School more seriously (3.41 GPA when 3.8+ would have taken 2 hours a week of studying - instead I did none).

2. Apply to other colleges. I am at The University of Iowa (good school, not great), but did not apply to ANY OTHER SCHOOL. I could have at least had a chance to get into some Ivies with my ACT score, but GPA would still have hurt me.

3. Taken my freshman year more seriously. Didn't really know what I wanted to do. Got a drinking ticket. Had a 2.44 GPA in Semester #1. Raised it to a 2.88 by Sophomore year... still rising.

1 month? I thought most expeditions called for something like 60-80 days no?

The main base of Everest is in Nepal. I assume the side the Chinese are going is the Tibetan side, which is not used for its steep slope..I am speaking from the base of my memory coz its been more than 10 years since I did those treks in the Himalayas.

I think people should climb K2..thats the most challenging mountain.. 1 out of 3 climbers die on that....

my three regrets:

1) My GPA. I could have done half a point higher if I just would have bothered. Too busy working and with my wife helping her though school as well as myself.

2) Moving around too much. My transcripts look like a college tour of California by way of Denver.

3) My GPA, see #1 again. By far the biggest mistake of my entire life and one that will haunt me for all of time. :(

Actually, you may spend any time you want at the base camps (so do many expeditions). However the optimal way is to arrive on 1-10 April, summit on 10-15 May, go back on 15-20 May. Acclimatization as well as packing up high camps with oxygen and food may take up to 2 weeks depending on how well you feel at the altitude :)

Both routes (South and North) are approachable.

As fas as I know the deadliest one is Annapurna - 4 out of 10.... but probably it is the most beautiful 8,000-er (just look at these pictures - https://www.mounteverest.net/news.php?id=10066) :)
