Hmmm....I wonder if it's appropriate to spend so much on "Thank You" gift.

Right after my recommenders wrote their letters (even before I found out decisions from schools), I gave them gift cards in $100 range.

Even this gesture made my recommenders a little uncomfortable - some refused to take it until I begged them.

If you want to give a tie for a present, I suggest you get a nice one in $100 range.

I love my silk pink Hugo Boss tie and I believe it was around $130. But with this economy, it should be cheaper....

For $100 I would recommend Thomas Pink. I believe that all of their ties are $100 and they have an excellent selection. There is at least one Pink store in NYC.

Ohhh...I know that store. There is one on Madison and 53rd-ish.

I first went in thinking it was Playboy merchandise store....because of its logo....

Yeah, its a great store. Classic British clothier. If I made more than a teacher's salary, it would be where I would get my shirts and ties. One day, perhaps...

I second Pink and Hermes. Another one to check out may be Ferragamo (similar style to Hermes but much more reasonably priced, should be $100 or less at an outlet or on sale).

Lastly, another brand you may want to check out is Vineyard Vines.

If the recommender leans towards the preppy side - Hermes, Ferragamo, or Vineyard Vines is the way to go.

If not - a simple/elegant Pink or Tyrwhitt should do the trick.

All I have to say is good luck with picking one out.

I spent over an hour yesterday in a department store picking out ties. :)

I'm a big fan of Facconable. I got my recommenders shirts as well (except one was really into biking, so I got them some biking gear). Facconable shirts are usually in the ~$100 range and pretty classy as well.

I highly recommend https://www.tmlewin.co.uk/ (Jermyn Street).

I order everything online (shirts, ties) and the quality is fantastic. The value is simply amazing.

I'm a huge fan of Windsor collar (and Windsor knot)....

Keep your orders under 4 shirts (per order); customs will sometimes flag it and have you get a customs broker to clear it. Otherwise, it will come through (in Canada anyways) as regular "mail"...

Not a bad idea. :) Just make sure you don't wear a UNC tie to your Duke interview.

Only one problem with your otherwise genious plan. It's bad luck to buy anything with the school's name or logo on it before you are admitted. It's the jinx factor.
