Asimov - wanted to get your thoughts on the Research Analyst role playing against you on the B-school app. I'm a McKinsey Healthcare Research Analyst, though I know the traditional perspective that the Business Analyst role is preferred, do you feel the schools would heavily weight against the RA role? Anybody else's comments are welcome on this. I'm applying this fall too.
Regarding the other points, all the Business Analysts (junior consultants) I know within McKinsey have gone to top 10 no questions asked.
-A.
To be frank, I don't think the non-client facing roles carry the same weight in business school admissions, even from McKinsey. It's further segmented if you are from an international office. With that said, I don't think it will exclude you from the top schools. As long as you put together a convincing argument for your candidacy. Schools know that there are smart and driven people from all walks of life. Getting in McKinsey from UG is as much about connections and pedigree as it is about smarts and drive (probably same can be said for b-school).
One of my classmate was a RA at McKinsey prior to Fuqua, and joined McKinsey full time as a consultant.
Looking at your profile, you listed general management as your concentration. If you are looking to go in to general management, I think the pedigree of the school matters less. What does matter is if the specific program you are looking for recruits at the particular school, which is based primarily on factors other than ranking. There are plenty of really good Leadership Development Programs that do not pull from any of the ultra elite schools.
Anyways, good luck, and I hope you will consider Fuqua in your pursuit of MBA. Your healthcare background will be valued here. And if you are planning to go back to healthcare, Fuqua's strength there is hard to beat.
