I have thought about the same question and i happen to be in the same boat as you. Planning to apply this year.
my guess is that given that their job is to screen applications and analyze our fitness with their institution and of course visa versa, they must have come across all universities in every geography and must be familiar with reputed regional schools and their USPs. I come from India's best Arts college, one of the oldest in India with spectacular alumni network but even i sometimes doubt how the adcom views my past institution. I hope someone can solve our query here. Cheers

I've heard that the adcoms generally have a clue about grade inflation (or lack thereof) at certain schools. I went to one of the academies here in the states (and studied engineering), so I know exactly how you feel -- I only know a handful of people who graduated with anything above 3.1 or so.

Let's hope it works out.

Hello waxer, thanks for your question.

It’s hard to say. I think since admissions committee people tend to do this for a living, they have a much better idea than the average person about the characteristics of individual undergraduate programs – it’s their stock in trade, so to speak.

That said, no one is infallible. And, if your school is smaller and does not have a widespread reputation, then you might find a place in your application to notate the information you’d like the adcom to have. Or, include some language in one of your essays!

Best of luck,
Brian
