Chat GPT says C
Quote:
Even though Lena, Jen, and Mark would like to go out to dinner together after the movie tonight, they will probably go straight home after the show. Of the five restaurants that are in the immediate vicinity of the theater, there is not a single one that all three of them like.
This mimics the flawed narrowing in the original:
  • There could be combinations (maybe two restaurants liked by two people each), but the argument dismisses the idea of dining out just because no single restaurant fits everyone.
  • It assumes the solution must be one thing that works for all, ignoring the possibility of multiple partial solutions or compromises.

Argument relies on one flaw in the reasoning given by the author and can be easily spotted in option B.

1. Humans brought MORE THAN ONE disease to Australia.
2. Mass extinction did not happen because of the diseases brought by humans.
3. Reason given by author - No one disease can be so fatal to so many different species.

Option B (correct) - We can fix many things ( diseases brought by humans ) but we cannot fix the apartment (cause mass extinction) because neither of us can fix both windows and bedroom door ( no one disease can be fatal to so many species).

in simpler words the argument and option B both have the similar reasoning of even though there are x number of things but no one of them can cause B then more than one of them also cannot cause B.

Good Question.

Why B is the right answer and not A?
Read the statement carefully, they have stated that the disease might not be the reason or cause for the animal extinction during recent times. the question asked is about mentioning the flaw, which means error. All the statements except B depict the same conclusion in different ways, but they are highlighting the term possibility , in case of option their is no such description about the concern case to conclude that is is stating any sort possibility .

It's B because the argument's mistake is it's assuming the capabilities of the whole by only accounting for the capabilities of its parts only. It's not accounting for the capabilities of all its parts combined.

For example, let's say there's a 100kg box, and there are 4 people who can lift 25kg. Obviously, if you ask all 4 of them to lift this box, then they can do it since 25 * 4 = 100kg.
However, it's clearly wrong for you to say that all 4 of them cannot lift this box because EACH of them can only lift 25kg.

That's what the argument did. It assumes that "human-borne diseases" (plural) cannot cause the extinction of the animals because "no one disease, however virulent, could be fatal" (singular). I can argue that even if this premise is true, the diseases TOGETHER can cause such an extinction.

Looking at B, it assumes "two of us will be unable to repair" because "neither of us is able".
Ok, how about if you and me repair those together then? That might work!
