The chefs’ argument assumes which of the following?

Assumption type question. The correct answer should bridge the conclusion of the argument and the reason offered for that conclusion.
Conclusion: people at risk of hemolysis who would like to eat their vegan dishes can do so without worrying about developing a blood disorder.
Reason: some chefs have removed the fava beans from their dishes
Possible logical gap: do the new dishes contain any other sources of oxidants in large quantities?


A. Blood disorders caused by carbonizers, which are close relatives of oxidants, can be prevented by removing the carbonizer-containing food.

Not the required assumption. Even if negated, the conclusion may still hold because carnbonizers and oxidants can function in human body differently.

B. The alternative ingredients maintain the iron and mineral content of the vegan dishes without adding oxidants.

Conclusion didn’t claim that the new dies maintain iron and mineral content. They simply don’t have oxidants. Irrelevant to the conclusion.

C. Removing the fava beans will remove all the oxidants from the vegan dishes.

Removing ALL oxidants is not necessary to eat dishes with fava beans, if their quantity is in moderation.

D. The chefs’ vegan dishes do not contain significant sources of oxidants besides fava beans.

Bingo. What we exactly need. Negated, this choice says that there are other significant sources of oxidants. This may invalidate the conclusion of the argument. Hence it’s a required assumption.

E. People at risk of hemolysis require additional sources of iron in their diet.

If negated, this choice claims that this category of people require additional nutrients, but this has nothing to do with the argument.

Find strengthening options to conclusion:

A. Blood disorders caused by carbonizers, which are close relatives of oxidants, can be prevented by removing the carbonizer-containing food.
Irrelevant: We are more interested to know details about oxidants in many fava beans.
This option won’t help much in strengthening the conclusion.

B. The alternative ingredients maintain the iron and mineral content of the vegan dishes without adding oxidants.
We are more concerned about alternate resources that replace fava beans. Not about alternate ingredients.
This options looks good at first. But reading closely , makes it irrelevant.

C. Removing the fava beans will remove all the oxidants from the vegan dishes.
Seems strengthened at first. Lets see
Negate : Removing the fava beans will not remove all the oxidants from the vegan dishes.
What if small quantity is left, still it is not dangeours.
What if 99% quantity is left ( because didn’t remove all) . then it is dangerous.
So negate of this option doesn’t destroy the conclusion.

Moreoever, this option doesn’t cover scope of other sources. We can not rely only on fava beans for oxidants resources, unless mentioned,

D. The chefs’ vegan dishes do not contain significant sources of oxidants besides fava beans.

This option directly hits at conclusion. What if there are other sources then removing fava beans is not helpful.
On negate: The chefs’ vegan dishes donot contain significant sources of oxidants besides fava beans.
Oh then this option destroys the conclusion.
Seems correct answer.

E. People at risk of hemolysis require additional sources of iron in their diet.\
This option doesn’t help much in strenghrening the conclusion as it doesn’t talk about oxidants in fava beans.

Reasoning: Fava beans contain oxidants that may cause a disease. Vegan dishes without fava beans can be eaten without fear of the disease occurring from these excess oxidants.

Easy to home on to the assumption without getting into answers. It has to do something with: quantity of oxidants in these vegan dishes.

A. Blood disorders caused by carbonizers, which are close relatives of oxidants, can be prevented by removing the carbonizer-containing food.
Out of context

B. The alternative ingredients maintain the iron and mineral content of the vegan dishes without adding oxidants.
That’s great and tempting. We are not concerned in the argument with this. We have claimed that excess oxidants will not be there, so it is not an assumption.

C. Removing the fava beans will remove all the oxidants from the vegan dishes.
The removal of fava beans need not remove entire oxidants to eliminate the chances of disease. Rather some oxidants may be essential.

D. The chefs’ vegan dishes do not contain significant sources of oxidants besides fava beans.
CORRECT. What if the vegan dishes have huge quantities of oxidants in other ingredients. Then the conclusion falls flat.

E. People at risk of hemolysis require additional sources of iron in their diet.
Out of scope.
