Efforts to model drift speed have increased due to the need to divert icebergs from oil rigs.
Right off the bat, two things caught my eye. First, 'have increased' which made sense with the subject 'efforts', and the present perfect tense should be used because the efforts started in the past but are slowly increasing. Second, 'due to', which is an idiomatic error; it should be replaced with 'because of' since it is modifying the action of increasing and not the noun.

Quote:
(A) have increased due to the need to divert
Incorrect for the reason stated above.

Quote:
(B) are increasing because of the need for diverting away
Even if we ignore the 'are increasing', which we shouldn't, 'the need for diverting away' just seems awkward.

Quote:
(C) have increased due to the need for diverting
'Due to' = nope. Bye, option C.

Quote:
(D) have increased because of the need to divert
Perfect. Just what I had in mind.

Quote:
(E) are increasing due to the need for the diversion of
Again, 'due to'.

Hence, option D is the answer.

Efforts to model drift speed have increased due to the need to divert icebergs from oil rigs.

Solution:

(A) have increased due to the need to divert: here we are talking about an action, the efforts have increased. Thus, due to is wrong and because should be used.

(B) are increasing because of the need for diverting away: When we are not sure of the time frame, as in if the action was taken today or some time ago or has been going for some time, we can go for present perfect. "Are increasing" means efforts are increasing right at this moment and it doesn't make much sense. Efforts can be undertaken at this moment or are happening at this moment but they can't be increasing at this moment. An Increase takes place over time.

(C) have increased due to the need for diverting: here we are talking about an action, the efforts have increased. Thus, due to is wrong and because should be used.

(D) have increased because of the need to divert:Correct

(E) are increasing due to the need for the diversion of: When we are not sure of the time frame, as in if the action was taken today or some time ago or has been going for some time, we can go for present perfect. "Are increasing" means efforts are increasing right at this moment and it doesn't make much sense. Efforts can be undertaken at this moment or are happening at this moment but they can't be increasing at this moment. An increase takes place over time.

Thus, the answer is D.
