Solution:
Remember that we have to preserve the original meaning in A, unless either that meaning makes no sense or we are correcting a grammatical error that changes the meaning. So while other verb tenses may make sense, they may also distort the original meaning.
Also, “due to” is a common GMAT idiom that is used incorrectly. We only use “due to” with nouns or noun phrases. For a verb or clause, we use “because”.
ACE - use "because of" instead of "due to" after verbs
BC: Wordy “need for diverting”
B: Redundant "away"
D: Correct
E: Wordy “need for the diversion of”
