Eligibility

To be eligible for admission to the PhD program, applicants must meet one of the following conditions:
  1. Completion of a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association; or
  2. Completion of an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing. Please see the minimum international education requirements.

Reapplicants

The admissions committee does not generally encourage reapplication unless there has been a significant change in the applicant's credentials.
Examples are:
  • Relevant coursework in which you received excellent marks
  • Improved test scores
  • Additional or newly acquired research exposure

Application Materials

Essays

Statement of Purpose
Write a brief essay on the following subjects concerning you and your intended field of study:
  1. your past work on relevant issues,
  2. what excites you most about the field,
  3. possible areas of research you might pursue,
  4. any research projects you have completed with a faculty member, and
  5. any other information you would like to provide to the admissions committee.
[The maximum recommended length is 1,000 words.]

Short Answer Questions:
  1. Please provide us with any additional information regarding your academic preparation for the Stanford GSB PhD Program. For example, there may be strengths or weaknesses in your academic background that your application may not indicate. (max 500 words)
  2. Please list the single major honor or award you have received, if any, that reflects most clearly on your potential for doctoral study. (max 200 words)
  3. Stanford University welcomes graduate applications from individuals with a broad range of experiences, interests, and backgrounds who would contribute to our community of scholars. We invite you to share the lived experiences, demonstrated values, perspectives, and/or activities that shape you as a scholar and would help you to make a distinctive contribution to Stanford University. (max 500 words)
  4. What are your career plans after your doctoral degree completion? (max 500 words)
  5. Please list other programs and institutions to which you are applying. (max 200 words)
  6. How did you learn about the Stanford GSB PhD Program? Applicant responses will not be available to the application reviewers. (max 200 words)
